drilling tank

Does anyone know how to find out if a tank has tempered glass or not? I have a 55g tank and I want to drill a hole in the back for the sump, but I don’t know if the tank has tempered glass. Is there a way to tell or are most tanks tempered or not. Maybe I can play the odds game if most tanks aren’t tempered.

It would be a 55 gallon. Is it new or older? There are 5 ways: Sticker on the bottom, call manufacturer, Move tank out in the sun use polarized sunglasses, use a glass cutter and scratch the tank, Drill it. I talk about these in this article.

If its older and came with a stand it is usually tempered. If it is new it is most likely not tempered. if it has a brand name on it (sticker) contact them they can tell you. Some manufactures use a color change to signal tempered or not (red/green)

Any cookie updates?

Thanks for the info. I got the tank from a friend and asked him and he said he got it from a friend so I don’t know how old it is. I think i’m just going to play it safe and get an overflow box, actually i’ll probably build one. Guess I’ll never live down the cookies lol. Thankfully the tank is doing great. Have a bubble tip anemone, 2 starfish, a black urchin, a turbo snail, an algae blenny, a bumble bee fish and 4 little hermits all getting along and doing well. I built a cover for the tank, the front opens up but also has a lock on it so, no more cookies or anything else for that matter lol, now the kids just like looking at the urchin and the starfish. Anyways thanks again for the help and the info.
Cookie Monster

i have one that came with a tank i bought from a guy a few weeks ago. he had it on a 125, not sure of his pump size… it’s a little dirty but u can have it for $20 if ya want.

I’d say the bottom will mostlikely be tempered but the back/sides not. So if that is where you intend to drill it, the back pane, then you should be good. Also, if it breaks, then all the more reason for an upgrade
