DSB...Keep it or chuck it? 55 gal semi disp. fuge/sump

As the title says. As some of you know I’m moving my 55gal reef into a 75 gal and putting the 55 underneath as the sump/refugium. I’m going to end up severely disturbing the DSB (3-4") in some spaces as I put in baffles, ect. I wonder sinces I’m mucking it up, should I just yank the DSB out and do a remote DSB? I’ll still be carrying over a ton of the existing bio by moving the live rocks over. Either way I will keep SOME sand in the fuge for the macros I’ll be growing in there, but should I just chuck the in tank/fuge DSB idea?

Thoughts? Comments?

With regards to the remote DSB I was thinking 10-12" in an enclosed trash bucket, this will be for denitrifying only.

first i’d state that a minimum DSB is 6" as far as getting an anarobic area.

4 inches is for looks. thats what i have, when i set up my 120 im taking the sand from my 26 and xfering it for sure.

the trick is not to bury your current sand under new sand, mix it in. UNLESS YOU HAVE HYDROGEN SULFIDE POCKETS (black areas in your sand)

otherwise i’d put most of your old sand on top or in between layers of your new sand to not suffocate the fauna

as new as you sand is you could use it all. sand in the tank is more preference. If you are going to have a RDSB then go BB or SSB

The in the tank (75) sand is SSB like 1" max(for looks and the sand sifters gobies and snails), the fuge/sump (55) currently is 3-4"
