Everyone have a plan and know what to do if they lose power? This is something many new hobbyist simply haven’t thought of yet.
Keeping the tank well oxygenated is far more important then temp and light during the short term and it DO(disolved oxygen) will drop very quickly during a power outage.
I did some research into battery backups(APC.com) and found that they should output Sine wave for pumps to work properly. Most are made for computers, the only line that is suitable for this hobby is APC Smart-UPS
Line. APC Smart-UPS 3000VA will run 100w for 5hours. The problem is it cost around 1K.
Hum, might have to look into them. 1K is cheaper than it costs to hook up a generator outside that switches on automatically.(and hire an electrician to legally hook it up) Would like to hear Shawn and Ted comment on this and give their opinions as it’s been said in 3-4 previous threads that such as thing doesn’t exist.(If my memory is correct.) Would be cool if they said it was a good viable option. They are much more into these things and understand them a lot better than I do.
At least one of our members has hooked up a generator for his tanks that turns on automatically. He sold his large tank though and hardly posts.
I have a portable generator and a lot of heavy duty extension cords and splitters.
I have a 16kw unit made by generac that automatically comes on during a power outage. It has a transfer switch and is one of the best things I have purchased. It does about 70% of my house including the HVAC system…When its 100 outside that comes in handy. If you have any questions I will do my best to help.
Might be speaking to you in a couple months. Seeing as I haven’t worked in a couple months I don’t have the $ at some point, but something better then the generator we have is in the plans.
Let me know. A friend of mine owns an alarm company and he was going to get into the stand-by generator buisness. i might still be able to get you one for cost if he is still a dealer…
