every algae known to man, a little help/comments

Okay so here is my list…

brown and green hair (snails doing good job should be gone in a week)
Red slime (gonna treat with Cemi-clean stuff)
Black slime (dunno what to do with this)
Red bubble i think, going away now
green and brown on glass (just scrape away everyday)

I have a spot made in my hob filter… im gonna run a bag of the cemi-pure and macros
Other than what i have listed above anyone have any suggestions or anything im doing wrong, or more efficient things to do

If your source for RO water had the same problems as well… Perhaps it is in the water. Try to get RO water with a TDS below 15 asap. Perhaps consider switching to distilled water for a little while.

In the long run you have phosphates in your tank. Weither any worthless hobby grade test shows it or not you have both phosphates and nitrates and some level in your tank. You should probably start to run some phosphate removal media, but I have to warn you the results will come very slowly. Phosphates will slowly be released from your LR and sand for a while.

Also get that skimmer working properly and switch out your carbon at least every two weeks.

In the long run:
Cut the source(bad water, and/or too much food) and then clean up what you have(dilution through water changes and running phosphate removal media)

In the short run:
Do what you can manually, but scrubbing, picking, and pulling, but don’t change too much at a time or stress out your new animals too much. Your new fish is 100 times more sensitive then the damsels.

is it ok i will remeber that… ya nothing to drastic added that chemipure which is suppose to work wonders or so the sales person said… Using the carbon within the filter carts is all i need right… i change those eery 3 weeks i guess i can do it more…

when i scrub and pic do i get it out or just let it float and get sucked up by filter…

Im using distilled water from acme… comes in 2.5 gallon jug things… EXPENSIVE… i need to get an RO unit soon, or somthing…

Working on the skimmer i will bring it to next meeting and i am going to call coralife about it tomorrow

harshness:
i marchingbandjs, will spend no more $$, not a penny additional , on critters until i get a rodi and get my sk fixed.
promise, right here on this thread!
can he commit to do it?
probably easier than ellen quitting ciggies.

I marchingbandjs will get no more live stock except the corals im getting on the 10th until i get an RO/DI system and get my skimmer fixex/ buy a new Asm skimmer…

happy lol…

u r the MAN!! you’ll appreciate the strain later.

yA lol, … this tank is a lot of work right now… BoNg

Dont use the chemiclean. On a newer tank it can cause issues (dead fish). Instead, work on getting your nitrates/phosphates in check. Water changes, reduced feeding, maybe shorter light cycle. For the red and black slime, I have always turned the lights off for three days, then did a large water change on the fourth day. That always worked for me.

Joe

large as in 30% or 50%… and ok i will try that ina few weeks…

how’s your flow? while my tank was a few months old, i experienced cyano outbreaks .The cyano or “slime” could be eliminated by adding a 3rd koralia no need to add chemicals…might want to looking into that after your water parameters are on point

my parameters are on point… phosphates register 0 but thats becuase algae is eating it all up. Once i get macros maby this will help…

i have a lot of flow 2 k2 on each side… so thats 1200 GPH then my filters on top are ripping and turning the water up top… i have a lot of flow, and you can see it pushing the slime around, which is why i dont get it.

Maby once i start with RO water…

buy the 2.5 gal things of ro water. or buy a few of the big blue water cooler thingys and maby if u make friends with a reefer near u they will re filll them for a few weeks till u buy ro di. if ur are broke like most of us i reckomend the mighty mite from air water ice cheep and great that is what i have been using for about 4 months.

check the link on the of the page under forums for reef central forum, there is a guy selling a RO/Di unit with a booster pump. Sounds like a good deal. There is a picture of it also.

RO/DI With TDS meter. Filters were just changed last month also have approx 3 Refills of the DI Resin

Location is Laurel Delaware.

Pickup only for $125.00
If you are interested I would be willing to pick it up for you, Laurel isn’t that far from me, and bring it to the meeting at the fish bowl.
John

nah already ordered mine … if this one fails ill try to find some on Rc… i am looking for Some lights for a 20 gal frag tank… and a new skimmer if anyone sees anything nice and cheap

what about your other parameters such as nitrates/nitrites?without a skimmer all of those organic compounds from your organisms will break down into multiple constituents inside your tank. algae/cyano requires more than just phosphates generally to thrive. It’s never a single answer in my tank, i have 2 koralia 4’s and one 2 and i still have a dead spot.

i have a very small dead spot as ihave a circulating flow… it seems to get everywhere just more in some places… Nitrates are fine and nitrites are fine… last time i have had anything spike was when the tank cycled…

“last time i have had anything spike was when the tank cycled…”
well as we all realize, tanks are always cycling, but let that go. when did the tank ‘cycle’ and how long did that take? how old is it and when did you put critters in? just curious, not accusatory.

O ya i know its always cycling, i was talking about the first initial spike, lasted 2 weeks i believe, went through ammonium, nitrite, then nitrate spike… I know everytime you increase bioload you normal cycle becomes more. Im speaking in cycles as when the bioload is getting increased to cover increased biological matter. 3 months old… wait 3.5 almost i think…

Put critters in hmmm

CUC after initial cycle
2 clowns 2nd week of aug
3 damsels 1st week sept
more cuc 2 weeks ago

When ever i test nothing comes up, i have 60-70 gallons of filtration without the pskimmer… and i change filter media every 2 weeks…Lotza carbon

Wow, so i tried that 3 day thing, day 2 today… the algae is disentegrating, the slime is disapearing and getting all stringy, my new fish are happy and not stressed… corals pissed, and anemone pissed but everyone needed a break from the light… ill update tomorrow night with the details…

Make sure you have some salt water mixed for a partial water change after the lights out. You will want o siphon out any dead or dying slime algae or you may end up with a hair algae problem. Make sure the water you use to mix the salt water is 0 TDS.

Moliken is right, not buying anything until you get your equip fixed is way easier then me quitting ciggies. But I am doing it anyway. It will be 3 weeks on Wednesday since I have had a puff. So if I can do it you can do it. PBJ!
