Favorite Fish You've Never Had/Kept Alive....

I would like to keep some of the more expensive wrasse like the flame. I am seriously considering a potters angel and a leopard wrasse as future purchases.

I just got a Carpenters Wrasse ordered for me. Quite stunning fish… I cant wait till it comes in.

I just got a carpenters last week and agree. It is a beauty!

It was between that and a McCoskers wrasse, but I couldnt beat the price for the Carpenters. Does anyone know if more than one of the flasher wrasses can be kept together? They are all listed as peaceful, so I’m not sure.

Heh I don’t know why but of all the fish I’ve seen I want a Misbar Black and White Osc. Clown Pair. Not too expensive or rare just love clowns and they got my attention!

Are the rare clowns just as hardy as the more typical ones?

Yep, just a color variation from lots of inbreeding.

ok, i was just wondering if it was a natural sign of weakness in the off spring…i think the same aspect does apply to some species of dogs with certain colors and all…

could we reason to say that these misbarred and odd color patterns would stand out in the wild and be far more clearer to predators? or from the same aspect, would this not make them look like the normal fish of the species that the predator considers prey??

anyone?

Lots of inbreeding usually brings out or accents all traits, both wanted/healthy and unwanted/unhealthy. Variety is the spice of life. Most ‘mut’ dogs have less health problems then ‘pure bred’ animals.

On the other hand the further down the line a fish is ‘aquacultured’ the more hardy it will be in captivity.

I don’t know what the ‘my two cents’ icon code is off hand but I’d type it if I did and I don’t feel like pressing reply and finding it.

a mut has less problems than a pure bred dog? ive never heard of that, but ive never thought of it either…i know some pure bred dogs have specific problems that owners try to breed out…

back to the fish though… Saint:)

I guess it comes down to survival and adaptation genes. Just like in DOGS <<<OT!! Lol I figure just like anything else the good/bad things get passed on but the species won’t survive unless catered to.

Well, coloration and species is a question that researchers are working on. Taxonomists arent 100% sure that every species that is classified in clownfish are actual species or if they are sub species. This is because there are really only 3 types of clowns as far as body shape goes, and the ones that have the same body shape can breed and produce fertile offspring, which technically makes them the same species. Its something that is debated a lot, but the general concensus is that one “species” evolves into another when it finds an inhabitated area that it can colonise. In such areas, since there is a very small gene pool in the new area, genetic traits such as different markings can become dominant in the population, and a new “species” evolves.

Ok, the marine biology geek is shutting up now.

:-)lol I knew I liked you Icy!

What a dork :GEEK: :SURRENDER

Actually that’s pretty interesting Icy, you’re studying to be a marine bio?

Already studied to become one, now I’m working on my degree in natural resources management. Its a litttle more of a broad field than just marine bio, so I am hoping to expand my job options (and pay grade :stuck_out_tongue: )

Good idea! I had thought about being a marine bio, then I looked at the jobs…and pay…and then quickly decided to get my degree in computer network engineering. Now neither has to do with my current job…or this thread! Sorry for the HJack

ha…damn forum terrorist…anyway…

does anyone have any experiences, good or bad, with chitons or limpets?

Ive seen some limpets recently that i really like, but ive never seen one in a LFS…

i have always been partial to moorish idols… and some crazy types of batfishes…

If you like the Moorish Idol but dont want to risk it dying, you could always try the Longfin Bannerfish.
