Favorite Fish You've Never Had/Kept Alive....

Im just doing this since im in the rebuilding phase, and think im going to go a different direction this time species wise…anyway, maybe we can break some myths and add some good care tips…

well one of my fav’s that i have always been hesistant to buy are hawkfish, specifically the Geometric Pygmy…

I really like my hermits and ive always heard hermits and hawks dont blend…any input on this?

I have always wanted to try a Midas blenny, but have never actually bought one.

Is there something special/hard about them? That one in DPA looks pretty sweet.

Longballz, I’ve always heard that hawks were like that as well, snails and hermits would be food for it. I’m guessing if you kept it well fed enough it would be alright…but you never know. Sometimes I wouldn’t mind something eating some of hermits thou.

Not really. They can be hard to get eating, but once they are eating they do fine. I just dont have one because we have always had some other sort of blenny and they can be aggressive towards a midas.

I love flame angels but have never been able to keep them alive. I have only tried twice and that was on totally different setup but they both died with in a month.

I picked up the midas blenny from DPA last week and he (“she” according to my wife since it’s “so pretty”) seems to be doing great. He meals like a champion, even takes prepared foods, not just mysis. Gorgeous fish and all the books I read said they adapt very well to life in captivity.

I am going to get a flame angel sometime in the coming months, but the price tag is a bit hard to swallow. Anyone else have experience w/ them?

For the price most places want for flames you could get a Potters Angel specially ordered for not much more.

I would love to have a copperband butterfly fish! …but i’m not allowed…

would deff like to try a potters

Great White Shark!!!

Think it’ll fit in a 55? lOl

That would have to be Odontanthias borbonius

Mike C. had one but didn’t do too well in the warmer reef setup.

Oh, hawks not only eat hermits, they will eat all your shrimp too. i had a fine pair of large, old cleaners and 4 pepermints. Until i added a spotted hawk fish. about a month later, no more shrimp. they get them when the shrimp molt and are soft, shelless ordouerves.

or how about a blacklined hawk?

oh yeah, my favorite quote for the shark/kayak photo is : You’re gonna need a bigger boat!

i really like that hawks and i was thinking maybe because of the needle noise’s design, maybe he would be a little more friendly, but i heard that isnt the case…

Im just wondering if the geometric pygmy hawk would be better with hermits and shrimps because it is relatively soo small???

that borbonious is a beautiful fish…how much do they usually go for?

$69.95 - which is very inexpensive for a Borbonius. I guess these are juvi’s.

I kept one for 3 years back in the late nineties. It was a model reef citizen never bothered any of my corals. It was extremely hardy. I have had one now for about 3 weeks and it is doing great except for nipping my sps. I knew it was a 50/50 risk. I am hoping that as I add a few more fish and corals it will stop. I love the flames so I am going to wait it out.
