Around this time last year, our club put together a frag swap where each person would bring a frag and get a ticket to pick a frag out from what was brought. I was wondering if anybody would be interested in doing this for this month’s meeting. There will be 3 different categories; one being Softies, the others LPS and SPS. For every frag you bring you will receive 1 ticket to select a different frag. The order of picking will be like a raffle, where if you’re number is called first you get to pick first.
On the bag that the frag is in, it would be helpful if you listed the type of coral, color, and maybe the lighting it was under. You may bring any frags that you can spare with.
I would like people to post who are interested in doing this so I can get a head count and see if this able to be done this month.
If you have any more questions about this, please feel free to ask them.
yes sounds like fun. i could bring some kenya tree frags and mushrooms and red monticap. will we have the option to recieve lps frags if we bring softie frags?
I don’t see why that would be a problem. The reason for seperating is so that people don’t grab an SPS coral by accident and only have minimal lighting.
Would you be able to post a pic of the red monti cap?
That sounds great! We have a couple green stars fragged and some blueish purple shrooms. Maybe the redish with aqua might be big enough too. We are in…spender972 & gotasplinter
I have a frag of kenya tree that I would be willing to use in the swap. It sounds like fun. The only problem I see is what if the last person ends up getting their own frag back? That doesn’t seem fair.

I will probably bring an extra frag so that the last person ends up with a different frag. Then I’ll just take the extra frag home or put it up for the raffle if we have one.
can’t remember exactly how it was done last year, but here’s one thing I get concerned with:
I bring a 1" Kenya Tree
I take a 1" Birds Nest
I’m donating a $3 coral and taking a $20 coral. not a bad deal for me, but imagine how pissed the guy is that brought the SPS expecting to get another SPS and gets a GSP instead?
Wasn’t it done last eyar that if you brought a softie you took a softie?
Just my opinion, I am gernerally very pleased to get anything I don’t already have.

I am glad you brought that up because that is why I was thinking of bringing the kenya tree for the swap versus one of my sps. If there are others that have sps or monti’s that would be willing to swap then that would cool.
If it is very organized I’m sure we could ‘class’ corals that are brought provided all can agree. Then you can only trade within your ‘class’ (unless the higher classed coral owner agrees for a lower classed coral).
‘Class’ can cross the softie, sps, lps lines and be more of a cost of buying and/or cost of ownership (how hard is the coral to keep) or can simply be softie, sps, lps.
But then again that may still lead to arguments and hurt feelings.
Just to clarify what was done LY for the mystery frag swap. Feb 08 Mystery frag swap
Since it was a first time and not everyone could support SPS corals I asked that people brought Softies or other low/medium light corals so everyone could participate. I asked for people to bring a small frag maybe with 2-3 heads/polyps.
I sent more detailed instructions out in the email but this was the general idea. Some brought some really nice corals and a few brought some SPS corals. But I think everybody got something cool. It was not about taking advantage but getting a coral you may not have had. A couple people brought multiple corals. Heck I gave away a beautiful zoa colonies that was 5 heads. I think Mech0255 got it. how are the new frags doing?
To make it better They should be categorized by light requirements so a person with CPF bulbs does not take home a coral that has high light requirements. They could be broken into 2 categories Low/med and high.
Tickets should be issued to draw for a coral (raffle) so there is no cherry picking of the corals.
All corals should be double bagged in extra water and use a permanent marker with: Reefer Name, Coral name, and special instructions for placement and feeding,
If someone wished to trade a higher end coral that should be arranged separately
Y’all are thinking this through too much. Just like the stock market, any raffle of this type will be a zero-sum gain. There’s always going to be “winners” and “losers”, if you want to concentrate on “value”.
If we pair down to too many catagories, there will be less in each. Personally, I was thinking two (2) catagories: (1) softies/zoas and (2) LPS/SPS. That alone will roughly provide some segregation on both light requirements and “value”.
And we won’t be diluting the numbers of corals into a bunch of smaller groups.
