February Meeting

This Months meeting will be on Saturday February 16 at 3pm.
Alemab3 (Mike) has agreed to host the meeting for the club. He has an awesome 125 gallon tank. For those who have never seen Mike’s tank:

Mike has a very nice tank and some great DIY projects. His corals are top notch. He travels a lot and picks up choice corals up the eastern seaboard. Not something to miss. Please arrive promptly at 3pm so we can start on time.

*At this meeting we will have a mystery frag swap. We would like to get as many people to bring 1 frag to the meeting. Every member who brings a frag will draw to receive a mystery frag. This frag should be something that will do well under low to med light. It does not have to be large, maybe 2-3 polyps or heads.

If you have checked the poll for meeting dates you will see Saturday was #1 with 9 votes. (4 + 5 for either Sat/Sun) Sunday #2 (3 + 5 either Sat/Sun) And Monday was close behind with 5. So we will try having meetings alternate between Monday and Either Sat/Sun. We will publish the calendar of dates after the February meeting.

As always please arrange all swaps of equipment or frags before the meeting.

Everyone who is bringing a frag please read.

Could you put the name of the coral and your name on the bag with a marker or on a piece of paper and tape it to the bag. This will make it easier for the receiver to know what they have and who they can direct questions too about the corals care.

Ok I am done sending the emails/pms out if I missed you I am sorry, please send me a pm so I can correct our email list.

I sent out 67 emails and 46 pms. I didn’t realize there were this many past and present reefers in DE. Please make sure we have you current information. We send one message a month so make sure your spam filter does not delete the messasge.

I have to say this will be the last month we will send out pms for a meeting. We will need a valid email address to send you current DRC info. It takes 3 seconds to send 67 but over an hour to send 46 through RC. If I was paid by the hour I would send the pms out, but I am here to have fun too.

Main Tank Top Down

I know that the lights over the frag tank were T5’s, but what type of bulbs are you using and how many? The reason that I ask is we are in the process of converting to T5’s and I really liked the look of the frag tank colors.

I think Mike was using a nova extreme set up and the T5 bulbs that came with it.

Bring this one back from the dead… Who was Mike and where did he go? That tank is looking might nice.

nice resurrection ian. a beauty!

Mike is Mike Calvetti. He didnt really go anywhere because he has never really been a super active member. Mike’s a really great guy, great frags, and his tank is even better in person. Local guy right here in Newark.

Great, thanks for the info Shawn. We should get him more active in the club, nice tank, nice guy, nice frags, sounds like a good deal to me.

Mike recently has had some stuff going on with family and hasn’t really had much time for his tank let alone time to talk about his tank.(though often times I feel like I’m talking about tanks more then working on mine) He also had some really rough times with his tanks after a couple of diadema urchins ate a large fuge down to nothing and dumped months worth of nutrients into his tank. His tank is on the way back though and he has been cherry picking some nice corals.

Glad you revived this thread I’ve been meaning to call him the last couple of weeks.

Ive still got the two little frags of the green birds nest and the orange monti cap he gave me growing. I’ve sent him a couple PMs that if he needs to start them again, I have his original stock growing. But last i talked to him his tank wasnt ready for more acros yet. So im still saving some.

Ive still got my hot pink cap from mike…ive had trouble with it over the last year, but its been growing great since i moved it to the 34g.

Hum… I am seeing a trend Shawn. Perhaps you do better with smaller tanks. The bigger the tank I use the better I do. We could help each other out! I’ll trade a brand new 2.5g tank for that big tank you just bought. What size was it again?

i dont get it. everything is identical in the two tanks but the results are completely different. after talking with you, andy, and some others at length im convinced that its got to be some sort of microfauna that came in with the live rock.

Well you said you were also using the small tank as a semi qt tank type thing. I would recommend moving a rock or two over to the main tank, but if you recently put something in there… who knows what you could also be moving. So when you want to trade? I’ll have to see if Craig, Tom, Tom, Andy, and Ken can all help us move the tank over to my place.
