okay so i was thinking about getting a few green chromis for when ym 90 is up in running because i like how they school and all let me know ur experiences with them
My experience may be atypical, but mine always die. I have never kept one longer than a couple of months. Usually with more aggressive fish tough, so your luck may be better.
We have three. I think the trick to keeping a group of them is that you have to add them all at once. I have tried adding more to the group we have 2x, and both times they picked on the newcomers untill they died (I would have removed but its hard to catch a 1" fish in a 90g). The group that is established however are perfect inhabitatnts other than with other chromis. Enthusiastic eaters and dont bother anyone.
Ive had a single green chromis for about 4 years. Great fish, but dont be fooled, they will not school. At best, they will shoal as juveniles. There is nothing i want more than a group of small schooling fish, and i can not tell you how many times ive tried or how much reading ive done on the subject. There is a TON of information out there on the subject, but there is VERY little sucess in getting fish to school longterm. Some fish(clowns, anthias) will form social groups with very strict heirarchies but its really only feasible in the largest of tanks. There seems to be a little more luck with the longspine and orangestripe cardinals, but again, its hit or miss and i would be surprised to see anyone have longterm success. The problem is that chromis(and cardinals) can shoal as juveniles, but when the mature sexually they will pair off and kill other unpaired fish. This is where the “buy odd number” advice comes from, but as far as i can tell, it rings of very little truth. Having pairs of chromis or cardinals is possible, and every now and again someone has luck keeping a trio like bellamy. However, if you want a group of chromis to truly school, throw a lionfish or triggerfish in the tank with them!
:-)lol heheheh
well at work we have about 5-6 that like to always school… and well a friend can get my a deal and get them for 50 cents each by the dozen so i was thinking about trying out a dozen in my 90 and see how they work out
I had 4 originally. They schooled. One died the fist week from a rock slide and the rest hung out together for the most part. They did wander off on their own but they always came back to the group. They are not the hardiest but are not aggressive like the average damsel.
\thats why i wanted to try it and because well i can get them in for dirt cheap:-p
i would take a few off your hands. i saw a video of some in a 300 with more agressive fish and they schooled.it depends on your tank mates. other then this i really have no input.
That sounds cool. That’s exactly what i wanted to do, throw about 20 or so in a semi-agressive fish only.
