Feeding Fish Hiding Damsel!

I have four blue-green cromisis, I had some frozen fish food and decided to give them a treat. I took one of the frozen capsules placed it in a seperate cup full of tank water then poored it in. Should I have used the whole capsule? There is a significant amount of food left on my sand bed. Should I scoop it all out? What types of food to people usually feed there fish. I also have a problem one of my small damsels has been hiding a lot. Why is this? Is there anythnig I need to do to ensure his survival? As always thanks so much for the help.

Lots of questions in there…Its usually easier if you split them out better for people to respond. So I’ll throw some questions back at cha!

Do you have clean up crew? (Nass. snails, hermits, shrimp)

How many fish? How big? What kind? If you have left over food your probably feeding too much.

What size tank?

How long has the damsel been in there? If he’s new just give him some time, you can try different foods to get him to eat, but he should be fine, they’re pretty hardy.

What do you have for flow? If you have spots in the tank where food can collect it will lead to problem algaes and rotting food.

I try to mimick nature when it comes to feeding. a little at a time, all the time. bUt then, i’m retired at home all day walking by my tanks, giving them a shot of feed, now and then. still, if you are working(lucky?) you can spread their feeding out over the day, morning, and evening and night, to smooth out their carb curv. if you kown what i mean. in the wild they snack all the time, when food swims by. once a day feedings, I don’t like. fish have short diguestive tracts, and dont hold much for long. they need a slow, constant feed to keep them happy. in my opinion.

You don’t have to. You can cut the piece of frozen food into smaller chunks and use those one @ a time.

If you have a clean-up crew then they’ll take care of it. But don’t make a habit of leaving extra food lying around. That’ll just lead to problems in the long-term.

My experience with chromis is that they’ll tend to “self-regulate” the numbers in the tank to whatever the dominant chromis is comfortable with. The rest will eventually become food. Unless you can somehow net the straggler and put it in another tank. But that’s just my experience. YMMV. (I assume by damsel you mean one of the chromis?)

As for “types” of food, I use a whole boatload of stuff - some dry, some frozen. The frozen is a mix of stuff that I put together. Fish roe, frozen fish of different types, frozen shell fish of different types, Golden Pearls, cyclopeze, purple nori. There’s probably more, but it’s just a hodge-podge of stuff. But the thing I like about the mix is that I can easily break off a chunk the size I want at any given time. I think the nori in the mix makes breaking it easier than if it’s straight meat product. And there’s something for practically everything in the mix.
