Fighting PO4

I have been fighting PO4 for awhile now, finely broke down and tested everything, this is with new filters, TDS reads 0, I have contacted Spectrapure as they offer many DI resins some that are suppose to be better at removing PO4 and asked which resin would be best to use as an addon to remove PO4, will let you know if I hear back.

If any of you have a Hanna Checker and could do the same test I would be very interested to see what you get.

@TAP = 0.34
@RO = 0.28
@DI = 0.16

Thats very interesting. I wonder what my lvls are. I dont have a hanna checker and the test tubes is just sohard to tell.

This is a very interesting thread, which covers the Phosphate cycle within a reef tank.

Thanks Andrew, my issue is not the export of PO4 from my tank but the fact that my RODI for top offs is putting it in at 0.16 @ 2 gals a day + 5 to 10 gals a week water change.
I do not have a refugium or want one I do use a GFO media reactor and it’s a chore and cost to try to keep them in check.

I did hear back from SpectraPure and they recommended adding a SilicaBuster DI, DI-SB-10HC to the end of the DI chain, so I went a little overboard as usual and just bought a MC-DI-2-10HC, so hopefully in a few days I can do another test and update you on how it works.

simple solution. add a drop or two of Lanthannum chloride to your RODI barrel and mix. should bind and precipitate any Phosphate in there instantly. I might be ordering another pint of the stuff i use, Just like Jo Yaiullo at Atlantis Marine World. I bought a pint a couple years ago, and am down to 6 ounces.

a gallon lasts about 3-4 months for Joes 20,000 gallon reef tank. a little goes a long way.

So Ken, can it be used in your tank to control Phospates ? Just wondering if it is safe for a reef tank, or can only be used on new RO/DI water.

yes. like i said, Joe yaiullo uses it on his 20,000 gallon reef tank up on Long Island for about 10 years now. here is an old article about it.

i mix 2 ml in 2 liter of ro water and drip to my sump over a couple days, now and then.

OK got a new checker HI-736 and it turns out the issues were with my reagent and the HI-713
first of all with a certified sample of 0.29 my meter was reading 0.35 then add that the reagent was reading +0.08 higher than the new reagents test done on the new HI-736 so it looks like I was a total of 0.14 off which made my post DI reading 0.02 and after the new MaxCap-D2 I am reading 0.0 on the new HI-736

Good to hear Frank. I guess as long as your not planning on feeding any HA, you’re good to go. ::rofl::
