I’m sure this is going to be full of colorful responses but my question is,is it necessary to use either of these?
Depends on the setup… ultra-clean sps tank/ no fish… prob not much detritus…
your heavily fed tank… use both !

+1 with John. However, if you do have to use one or the other, one must stock up on them so that you can change it often.

are you using any mechanical filtration now? does it crud up often?

Necessary to keep animals alive in a marine aquarium? Certainly not.
Help full? Yes it can be.
Harm full? Yes it can be.
Either left with out maintenance for too long can do more harm then good. (as with just about anything)
