Fish Bowl under New (Old) Management

Not sure what to think of this, the Fish Bowl is under the previous owners again. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water! So, we’ll see what happens. They said to look for big changes in the next few months. Today they had a few chalk bass, I know a couple were looking for them, and they looked good. They also had a “sheepshead fish” for six bucks. Am I wrong to think that is a minnow? I think you can get these babies at the bait store for a buck a dozen. Maybe one of you biology types can chime in and confirm or deny. If so, that’s funny stuff. No wonder they keep going out of business.

I noticed that as well today when I went in to look around. I know that I wasnt to thrilled with they way things look, but I guess time will tell. I can say I didnt like the 5 screaming kids running around. Hopefully the new owner will make some changes for the better. (hey its possible {:-})

This is the info I found on sheepshead fish… definitely not a minnow. LOL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archosargus_probatocephalus

Also check out the teeth this thing has… wondering if it is a spoof… saw a couple of sites that said it has human-like teeth. http://www.wildflorida.com/articles/Sheepshead.php

Hope Springs Eternal!

You Lower, slower Del Reefers need a few improved LF stores down there.

I hope they can follow through in this economy. All’s it takes is customers, cashflow and a lot of hard work on the store’s part.

I think you’ve got the wrong sheepshead. Looks more like this…

Anybody recognize these from fishing in the bay?

Not one I recognize from my extensive time in the field around here while working in the lab, but it is possible. There guys also seem to in hyposaline areas where most of the research I helped with took place. I’ll try to remember to send a couple e-mails find out if they are local.

I was about to suggest checking fishbase.org It’s probably the best look up for fish by common name. People frequently misname fish on websites and google picks them up and shows their picture, so fishbase works better.

To defend the fishbowl a little the website does say, “Is easy to maintain in the aquarium (Ref. 27139).”. Perhaps he did buy them at a bait shop and that’s how he/she plans on making upgrades in the store, by selling hardy .50 fish he can pack in the the fresh or salt aquariums for 6.00 each. Kind of like Jush fish selling fresh water fish acclimated to salt at 4X normal retail price.

Jon, are you talking about the giant catfish at JustFish? I was cracking up! As far as the sheepshead fish, I’m positive those babies are the same that you get at Bowers Beach for bait on the Headboat. This http://nas.er.usgs.gov/queries/FactSheet.asp?speciesID=662 says they can be found here, but I suppose they may have imported them from the gulf coast.

yes delaware bay does ave sheepheads. have caught them out of ewes at reef site number 8 and 6. my biggest one so far is 15 inches. i also have had many trigger fish in the 16 inch range.

hmmm. i used to catch 10 pound sheepsheads in lake erie when i was a kid. kinda like a big carp but different. must be a different kind. oh, this site says they are drum fish.

or saltwater like one of these?

I missed the “giant catfish at JustFish” haven’t been in there for a while. I’ve seen them sell green spotted puffers out of both their fresh water tanks and their salt at the same time and just jack up the price when they are sold in the salt isle.

Anyone been in the last week or so? Just curious if they have made enough of a change that it would be worth stopping in.

Jon

for us locals, all we have real close. but yes i was there sunday. and buoght the medium sail fin tang they had. beautiful fish and eats like a pig. very nice lady who i forgot name is taking over and will order things we want. we will see how prices are and what happens but GOD knows we need a GOOD DOVER store, you guys upstate are fortunate to have dpa.

I have been in 3 times since the new owner bought it. I wasn’t really impressed the first time, but I also think that it was only a day or two after they got it. Lately, the prices have been a lot better. The old owner used to sell sailfin tangs for around 40$ each, and when I was in the other day they had 2 for sale for 25$ each… I haven’t seen a better price anywhere on them. We have bought two things there latley… a lawnmower blenny for 12$ and a 3" around frag of Monti cap that looks like it will be a purpleish color for 5$. On the other hand they had a 1" frag of xenia for 40$. Seems like there have been very good improvements, but its not perfect. Hopefully it continues improving.

I was going to say they were half price on their xenia compaired to LiveAquaria, but I suppose LiveAquaria never sold any xenia and finally chopped their price in half. Still a heck of a lot more then I ever charge for MUCH larger pieces.

It takes time to pull a biz like that around. We’ll see…

Well, I’m guessing that they are getting charged a large price for their corals from the wholesaler, so maybe they would buy locally grow frags. Worth a try if anyone has a ton of xenia in their tank :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

I cut back on the number of mother colonies I had when I went to move and one LFS I was taking to couldn’t keep them in stock. You wouldn’t believe the faces I saw when people noticed xenia on rocks where there were so many sponges and feather dusters on them you could hardly see the rock. Will take me a while(couple of weeks) to grow back and then have frags available. All I have extra of right now is Red Sea and none of it is currently in prime condition due to the move, so I’ll wait until it’s recovered.
