i have a 25 TAll or somethong like that. it’s 12 in deep.
currently i have a power sweep that is moded(no longer sweeps) and stock does 270. this is not enough flow and probably uses way to much eletricty(as if i pay the bill lOl). im thinking a k2 will give me what im looking for at 600 gph. it’s double what i have now but i think that it will give it awsome flow and not be to much. the maxi jet 400 mod kit will do 1300gph. i think this is to much but i have never seen 1300gph
would the k3 be to much(850)
would the maxi with mod(1300) be way to much
i have also seen mods for a 1200 maxi jet where they drill holes near the main intake and saw off the end. what kind of gph would this give me?
i have drilled holes in my maxi and it looks very sucessful but i havent sawed off the end. ill post the video in the diy section. sorry for the long post lOl. thanks brett
Keep in mind that Koralia’s will give you a wider dispersment of flow. meaning it will be spread out over a larger area and thus does not feel as powerful.
I’d go with the K3 - bigger is always better philosophy.
the 400(106gph) does 5w while the power sweeper(160gph) does 12.5w with the mod the gph is close. i just want to get the big guy out 270 gph and uses 23w. ill tell pops he will save a fortune and he will be forced to pop for a new ph. if not ill buy one lOl.
The K3 should be plenty of flow and it more aesthetically pleasing than the mj400 w/ mod. Two K2s might work out pretty good and give you 50x flow, and you could eventually setup a wave type system
a wave maker is pretty expensive 50$ minimun. im looking to just spend 40$ to improve flow so i have a better chance with sps and some what for looks. the thing i have now is ugly and u cant get much worse to be honest. i’m thinking about doing a vortech on my next setup. there NASTY! google some demos. the olny problem is they have a heaivy price tag. 3-400$ very nice and the olny power head you’ll ever need. but if you think about it a wave maker($150) and 4 modded(70$) 1200’s = $430+ i think. i don’t know but ill have plenty of time to do research.
I didnt know people were having issues with MJ mods on a wavemaker. As a matter of fact, the main reason i switched from K3/4’s is so i could put them on a wavemaker after reading all of the rave reviews about these things on wavemakers. Standalone MJ are designed for wavemakers, i cant imagine the shroud and slightly larger prop make that big of a difference, but i guess ill find out >LOL< Mine are a little more noisy than i would like, but other than that they’re great.
Also, for the life of me i dont know why everyone says these things are so insanely powerful. I have 3X modded MJ1200’s with the smaller prop in my 75g and i think i could use more flow. I tried the large prop and it was insane, but i dont think the smaller ones are that bad.
Ive had tunze, koralia, mj mods, and a vortech(still have). By far, the tunze is the best powerhead you can ever own hands down as long as you can afford to skip one or two mortgage payments. The vortech is a close second but MUCH more affordable and comes with an intergrated controller which is great. My main beef with vortech’s are you cant angle them. The have to sit flush on the glass which i imagine could be troublesome in a tank with more than one.The koralias are the poor mans tunze and are probably the best bang for your buck if you dont want to put them on a wavemaker. However, if you want powerful, random, reliable flow then MJ mods on a wavermaker are your best bet. Ive never had a startup issues and mine turn on and off probably 1200-1500 times a day. If the mod shortens the life of the maxijet and it only lasts 2 or 3 years im ok with that because it will only cost me $20 to replace a MJ1200. My only beef is a little more noise than im accustomed to.
I forget that everyone doesnt use the larger props… I have them in both of our MJ mods and I forget that it even comes with the smaller ones.
For the startup/lifespan issues I am just repeating some stuff that I have heard. Dont take it as holy writ, but I’m faily sure I read somewhere that the frequent startup caused a lot of stress or something. I’ll have to see if I can find it.
On the eco mods they say “NOT FOR WAVEMAKERS”, but they don’t say that on the sureflow box. The two are very similiar. I still have a sureflox mod and am planning on using them on a wave maker setup, currently it cycles every 30 mins and makes some clicking and blasts out some bubbles that have collected, but I think it is only because its sat for 30 mins, sometimes it starts without a peep.
Ive never heard mine click at all unlike my koralias. Koralias are infamous for all of the problems described above(clicking, spinning the wrong way, not restarting). Mine would click like crazy if i had to restart them for any reason and i had a K4 that wouldnt restart at all sometimes.
Ive had my 3 MJmods for several months now and my only big complaint is an intermittant humming type noise from the MJ itself. I thought i just had a bad MJ at first, but ive heard the same noise from all three. It could be added stress on the motor from the combination of the mod and wavemaker but im not too worried. Ill be sure to post if i ever lose one but so far so good.
On this topic…Sortof Craig, didn’t you say your RK2 had some sort of soft start? I’m trying to figure out how they heck they do it w/o adding a large other component. Soft start is pretty easy for DC, but not AC. Can you confirm or deny there is any difference on starting up your Koralias on the RK to just plugging them in? (Not using regular timer)
so the k3 was way too for where i originally planed to put it. it is ok where i have it now but i did have to move a bunch of stuff around. i think a k2 would have been perfect but this power head might work thanks for the input though. i would take a too large power head over a too small one any day.
