If anyone here is also running a FW tank, and lives somewhat locally to Elkton MD, let me know. I’m looking for some bio-media (small piece of filter floss, sponge, ect…) to jumpstart the cycle in this tiny 5.5 gallon tank.
The 90 still has water/substrate in it. This am I found a half berried lime green zoa frag with 30+ heads on it. FREE to anyone who can spare a few million nitrifying bacteria.
I have a FW tank, you can have some water and the filter cartridges that I need to change out. The filter is an emperor 400 so you may have to cut the floss off. I’m just over the line in Newark, shoot me a PM and you can swing by tonight.
Thanks to another great new DRC member, I have an instantly cycled 5.5gallon tank.
I picked up two of the rear filter pads off of his Emperor 400 filter.
Anerobic and Aerobic bacteria…GO!!!
Both filter pads packed into the Aqueon Quietflow 10
OG filter vs TWO of these!
Instantly cycled 5.5g Freshwater shrimp tank.
Ammonia and Nitrite be Damned!!
Thanks HoBoJoe!
Glad I could help, it was nice chatting with you this evening. Can’t wait to see the new tank with some critters swimming around.
Thanks again for the Zoa frag!
That looks nice! any idea of what type shrimp to raise in there? There seems to be a good selection to choose from

theres an old sorta craigs list for fishy stuff . they seem to have lots of FW Shrimp varieties for sale from hobbyists. I would stick with the US based guys, as shipping from the overseas places would cost a lot and probably work out bad for the shrimp. it seems these local guys have gone through that and finally got a good selection growing here closer to home.
check under Fresh water Inverts. varied selection and a pretty wide price range. but its a starting point to look at. I think there are lots of online retailers with them too. or check DPA to see whats on their available lists from suppliers. lots of different colors will look sharp against the black gravel.
Yeah Ken, the Shrimp world is crazy. Lots of different colors/patterns.
I actually won some Mishclings (Crystal Shrimp crossed with Taiwan Bee shrimp…i think), with one Panda shrimp. (A pattern variation of a Taiwan Bee shrimp) on one of the Shrimp forums I joined. (hence the rush to get this tank cycled)
My plan was to keep CRS (Crystal Red Shrimp) in the tank.
Thanks again for the links!
