Top off system cut off valve failed tonight and we are shutting down our reef we will need the money to help pay for the damages, water leaked through the hardwood and threw the ceiling of our finished basement. Husband wants it gone, and I can’t blame him. Everything is in great condition, except the top off valve obviously (that will be destroyed!)… We are selling the whole setup. 75 gallon reef ready tank (corner drilled), stand, 30 gallon sump with baffles, hood, solar extreme48" T5HO with moonlight leds and built in timer, mighty might pump and all plumbing, 2 heaters, power head, test kits, 55 gallon trash can used for overflow and assorted chemicals. We still have fish and coral also if anyone is interested, if not they will be traded into lfs. 2 clowns, 1 mocha clown, 2 engineer gobies, domino damsel, yellow tail damsel, gold bar damsel, 6 line wrasse, coral beauty, yellow tang. Kenya tree (but a pretty one!), some mushrooms, sps, ricordia yuma, and some zenia. Will take any reasonable offer on any of it. Would like to move it fast so we can get underneath to repair the damage to the floor. This is not how we imagined leaving the hobby especially after working so hard to have a beautiful, well established tank
Omg that is awful. Epecially after working as hard as you did on the house and the floors. Good luck in the repairs, selling the stuff, and drying out. A dehumidifier works wonders getting water out if the floor.
Thank you, yes we are very upset… That float valve was only two months old at the most, the piece still moves, but the power doesn’t cut off we are going to try to call other companies today, service master charges 175 just to come out on the weekend they would not send anyone out last night. Luckily my father was able to bring us a power blower but I think we are going to have to cut out a good section of the ceiling and have it redrywalled. It’s just a big nightmare. I don’t even want to see the boards under the tank. Bad news is the insurance will cover but we have a $2000 deductible. We hate to get rid of the tank, but at this point we can’t reason keeping it.
So sorry to hear that :-("
good luck ::
Sorry to hear! Sent you a PM re: fish.
VERY SORRY TO HEAR!
Where are you located? and do you have any idea how much you would like to get for all of the corals?
Thanks and good luck!
Sorry about what happened. I hope all goes well. Pm sent about some fish.
Thank you everyone for the kind words. I wanted to let you all know that I was successful in talking my husband into keeping the tank (of course without the auto top off!) I apologize for any inconvenience. It looks like we were very lucky and only sustained minor damage to the ceiling and floor directly beneath the tank. I told my husband if we keep the tank we can save ourselves the hassle of having to break it down and that we could just repair the floor underneath when we eventually go to sell the house. If we sell the tank we will have to fix it now since it will be visible and besides the damage is already done, no sense in taking it out now… LOL so I get to keep my piece of the Caribbean for now
It’s good to hear your staying in the hobby I hate to hear of someone leaving because of tank problems. No worries in the fish.
there are several options for leak detection also, from controller based detectors that sounds an alarm and sends an email to audible only alarms that sit on the floor next to the tank or sump that can be had from Lowes / Home Depot for under $20.00
You could also fail safe the ATO to have a max run time, or use a ATO system with a built-in controller that has a max run time setting built-in.
