Fuge light questions

Anyone ever have rusting issues with light bulb bases? Namely on the spiral power compacts. I used one before and the bulb rusted at the base so much it broke off. Do you guys use some sort of splash guard? Also, what is the preferred spectrum/wattage for chaeto?

I bought a 10k bulb at Lowes in middletown for about 10$ and it works great

was just reading up on this subject recently :GEEK:

Cool, good article, I might have to try out one of those bulbs, I’ve been using a 100w equiv 6500k (or so) bulb and have been eh-ok on the results.

Spectrum around 6500K is ideal for plant growth.

Not only have I had them rust, I had one burst in to flames last year and put a big ole scorch mark on the door.

I forget the exact circumstances but I remember having it in my hand when it happened so damage was minimal.

were you running the light 24/7 when it burst?

No, I run my fuge lighting on a reverse cycle to reduce PH swings.

wow, dropped mine in the sump once with the spiral CF . Kicked the gfci out and once it dried fired right back up :SPIT) now i use the outdoor style with the glass housing around it just for light in the sump

please dont tell me that, im using the one like in the pic, 90watt replacement 6500k and mines directly under the display’s glass, all i need is that to burn…

Remember, that is Craig that had that happen… if there is a way to break something he has. ;D

True. If it can be broken, burned, or spilled on the floor I have found a way.

did you actually have water spritzing on it? i have no water contact whatsoever, probably not even vapor, i have a cooling fan blowing directly on the light. (well its on a 45 degree between the water and the light, but it keeps the bulb cool to the touch)

Nope - no water - just humidity, salt creep, and condensation.
