OK, a couple weeks ago i broke down and bought a brand new puter and LED monitor. a DELL inspiron I3, 8 GIG, 1TB. just has the windows 7 and little other software. and then i signed up to get bundled in FIOS by Verizon. a couple guys pulled the fiber to the house today, trenching it into the ground. I think im he last guy on the block they pulled to. so today, wed. they will install the transition box, battery backup, cable boxes and modem/wifi router. so not sure how to get online with it yet. might be incognito a while. the old puter here is on a G router off the comcast modem now. thatwill be gone. i guess they can log me onto theirs, but i dont remember my security code for my USB trans/ceiver… or is the code just for the lynksys router? IDK?
the new puter is new. i just hooked it up, and turned it on. no connection. mcafee virus protection not activated yet, till i get online. so i hope the V guys can take care of that. wish me luck i may be calling someone for a hand when i screw it up. always do. Im no good with software. and set up. I had the store load AOL desktop on it, so when i get to my account, i can get their mcaffee for free. and then be ready togo. i hope. i hope we can get both puters logged on for now. catch you later.
The verizon modem is actually a wireless router as well. It has a set number for the network ID (i think like 6-8 digits) and the password is written right on the modem.
You can either run an ethernet cord to your desktop and you will have instant internet (no passwords or anything) or you can figure out your USB wireless transceiver and use the numbers on the router.
IIRC, you go online to your verizon account and it downloads something onto your PC for first time setup, but it was pretty intuitive and took less than 5 minutes to do.
All of your cable boxes are accessible on the wireless too which makes it awesome for widgets (ie smartphone remote, dvr etc.)
Let me know if you need more help.
well the V guy just pulled up.

Holly crap Kens jumping up with technology where’s my fainting smiley.
Congrats on the new toys
Yea!!! The Verizon guy spent about 5 hours installing all the stuff and hooking it up and getting both my puters booted up to the new system. the old one and new one. He did a really nice job on instalation and setting up my puters. real patient with me getting logged on. but WOW the speed is great with the fiber and the new puter. my old one runs faster on the new router, but still is slow. so my old processor was the hang up. this new one is nice and smooth and fast.
So ive been updating software and getting used to the windows 7. still have to download the AOL FREE macaffee suite and replace the gratus one month copy that came with the puter. so i can still screw something up. just give me a little time. oh an swap the printer to it, and get some speakers. cant hear them famous words yet on the new puter… You’ve Got Mail!!
Otherwise im pleased and surprised nothing blew up… yet, I checked the speed and i seem to be exceeding their 25/25 mbps they promised and getting 29-31 mbps up and down, good deal.
FIOS has been the best thing on this puter in a while. We had DSL before, what a huge difference. I run a desktop 2 laptops & a ps3 on the router, no problems.
yes, the combo of a new puter with lots of speed and ram and FIOS makes my old puter and the cable
broad band feel dial up. I think the installation guy said their new basic speed will be 25/25 not the 15/5 some of the old ads note. preparing for the future demands. anyway, it sure makes my browsing a lot faster and easier.
Fixed.
