Goby Question

Anyone know of a goby that is a true sand sifter that will not grow past 3-3.5"?

i have a white sleeper goby. never stops chewing. very pretty eyes, seems to fit the size requirements.
alenciennea sexguttata. i think. it is distinctive with a black tip on the dorsal fin, and six small spots of blue on the head. a real character!!
was chased for 24 hrs by my starry blenny, but held his own. constantly a substrate mover!

dragon goby… stays small, kinda gray and white with a little blueish tint. not the most beautiful of gobies, but a damn hard worker imo (pretty cheap too)

thanks im going to do some research on those fish…i want one for my 55, but i also have a established starry blenny that could reek hell…i also have this 40 gallon long that im going to make a marine planted tank with all gobies…and a few shallow water corals…the tank is only about 12-13" deep, so with a sand bed the tank itself will be very shallow.

im just waiting for a pump to pop up on the used market to do that set up… Saint:)

Hmm anyone think my starry and golden headed sleeper goby will have problems?

i have never had any blenny vs goby issues… my gobies make a hole and camp, coming out to eat. my blennies r all over chompin algae. not to say that there will never be any issues, just havent had any in any of my tanks.

Mike, FWIW my golden headed sleeper is NASTY with the sifting. Honestly this guy goes down with a little buffer pad and polishes the sand bed. Only problem he’s got ADD and will roam the tank dropping bits of sand on everything. AFA size I’m not sure if he fits your req. but he is probably around 3" now? Give or take a 1/2"

Thanks dude, good to know, both these guys seem to LOVE some nori. My ‘zebra goby’ camps, but the sleeper is nuts, always busy.

yeah i think the sleeper goby would be a good temp. fish for me, but would soon outgrow the size i was looking for…

seems like the more i research the more i see that the sand tossing can be a issue, esp. with sensitive corals…

maybe ill just put some more nass. in there or a fighting conch maybe…

It’s pretty frustrating as well when your new clam has sand all over it or your find one of your mushrooms buried with an edge poking out.

My diamond goby is an excellent sifter. I am not sure on the max size, but this guy seems to leave the sand on the bottom. Now if you have a lot of corals sitting on the sand bed this might be a problem. I have never had a problem with my clams getting sand dropped them, but you will have some detritus in the water for a a few weeks until it gets filtered out. For me the clean sand bed is worth the trouble, and I just love my goby’s personality. He is a real character to watch.
