i was just wondering what is good ich medicine to use on a reef tank? i got a blue hippo tang the otherday and didnt put him in my qt tank (that already has ich) but than i noticed today when i was looking at him in my 90 that he has got some ich what is the best invert/coral safe medicine to use? is kick ich good because thats what ive been using in my 25 and it still seems like the ich is there! it seems like im in a never ending battle with ich and i was just wondering if anyone had any ideas. Thanks in advance!
try to get the tang healthy. boost its immune system with a good diet and good water. it may take longer than using medican but it woulnt kill the good bacteria. what are u feeding it? if it gets a healthy diet it should be able to fight off the diease.
+1… if u can’t take it out. or a 2 minute freshwater dip daily is really good (if u can catch him…) all problems i have been battling for the last 2 weeks with a cowfish i have. luckily he is easy to catch!!! but then my occi’s got a little, and werent so easy to get ahold of. so i am running a hospital tank with coppersafe in it now. just be SUPER careful not to transfer ANY copper into your reef. it is awesome for the ich. acclimate them in a separate bucket back into your dt. i even net the fish after acclimation, dip them in a 2nd container of clean tankwater, and then into the tank. (never be too careful) but usually if the medication is reef safe, it’s ich safe too!! lol
In the tank really not a lot you can do that I would really consider reef safe.(though their are some manufactures that claim to have reef safe products)
In my opinion fresh water dips would likely stress the animal more then help.
Feed like crazy. As much as he will eat. Well rounded as possible.(check the other thread on feeding hippo tangs for suggestions) Do small frequent water changes to keep your chemistry perfect and your Nitrates and Phosphates at 0. Adding more food will be adding more waste, but it is the best thing you can do for the animal to keep him healthy.
Not that I would take it as factual information, but I once heard a wholesaler say the only way to keep small hippo tangs was to keep them in with live macro algae which they could graze off of. Try talking with the guys at Premium Aquatics as they tried this for a while and I am not sure what their results were. I am sure any LFS can suggest several good foods and like I said previous quantity and variety is important.
If you decide it is time to remove and treat the animal I can provide some information the best treatment in that case, but the best thing you can do in a reef tank is feed.
Good luck, hope it works out.
+1 on overfeeding
You can try garlic, it always seemed to help my outbreaks. I don’t know if it fights off ich, or stimulates the appetite, but it seemed to work.
