WOW! I was trying to hold my breath until old leather neck came up for air. i would have drowned. the film sure shows a lot of damage to that reef. lots of dead acros and stonies covered in silt and some algae. but a new crop growing on their skeletons. Still, there are lots of bare spots. unfortunately global warming and acidification continues to rise. Its been 23 years since the Kyoto protocol was proposed to reduce emissions to 1990 levels the keep warming below 2 C. but the globe has never stopped increasing them. so we are on track for dangerous levels.
CO2 has passed the 400 ppm mark and rising faster.
It has taken the world 150 years or more to build our modern carbon infrastructure. almost everything depends on it. Green energy is growing fast, but its going to take a long time to replace enough of the carbon system to stop the rise, let alone reverse it. Every year the world population grows another 80 million people. That’s like adding the total population of the United states to the world every 4 years. all needing some form of new energy, resources and food. so the growth in demand seems to stay ahead of the savings.
Im not sure we can get there from here, at that pace. Coral reefs are going to have to save themselves by genetic adaption and change of species i guess. because we aren’t doing enough to save the status quo.
Other than that. . . Cool video. I wish i could swim the oceans like a great turtle and see the sights. I have to put a snorkel trip on the Barrier Reef on my Bucket list, before either it or I fade away.
