Hey guys, Ive been looking in on how to get rid of this. I have heard 3 days of darkness, hard skimmmnig and cuttin back food will do the trick? Im on day 2. The only coral looking to upset is my duncan. Comments/concerns would be gratefully apprecitated.
blue spotted sea hare or marine algae fix. great results with the api product. here’s a mile long reefcentral thread on using it. VERY SAFE. i have used it, never lost a critter close to application or during
I’m having the same problem going on with mine. My nitrate jump to 10-20 ppm using the API test kit. I made some home made food for the fish and corals. I’m hoping that’s where the culprit is and I’m cutting down on it. And of course water change comming soon.
The blue spotted sea hare or marine algae fix as Paul stated does work well. But for me the sea hare was a miss. It didn’t eat anything, just cruse the tank. So, I took it back to the fish store. As for the marine algae fix, I heard it was a good product to use and good for long term as well. If my problem persist, I might have to go that route.
Hi Casey. Are you using an RODI filter for making salt water and for topping off your tank? Tap water can be a significant source of phosphates amoung other things that aren’t good for your tank. The hair algae needs phosphates and or nitrates to grow so I would try and figure out where these are coming from and do your best to elminate the sources. Pull out as much as you can by hand and maybe try a few herbivors once you have figured out where you are adding the fertilizers to your tank. I don’t know if the three days lights out will work with the hair algae.
Hey guys thanks for the resposes. I think i figured out where the algea come from. My RO unit canisters busted so i was getting gallon jugs of water from the shoppette. I have a good feeling it was coming from that. My skimmer is rated for a 300 gallon tank so theres more than enough skimming going on with heavy feeding.
Theres no store that sales RO water so i just used the gallon jugs. I recently got 20 gallons of RO from a friend unit i can order the canisters for my unit.
I turned my lights back on bout 10 mins ago because i cant stand to look at my duncan as bad as its looking. Hope i didnt lose it because as a surprise to myself it was doing awesome, ive never been able to keep that coral.
Results from the past 2 days of the black out the hair algea did start to disappear. I hope its more the water change i done 2 days ago but time will tell.
thank moliken. I have been looking for cheap replacements but alot of places the canisters are touching 30 bucks. In that case would be better off buying a brand new unit.lol
