Hard water in salt water tank??

I have a severely high level of hard water in my salt water, corals tank. How do I bring the “HARD WATER LEVEL” down? I have been doing small water changes every other day. Is there anything else I can or should be doing to bring the hard water level down?

Welcome, I’m sure someone here has the answer your looking for. I believe I may have met you at the Fish bowl in dover. Glad to have you aboard an good luck.

Please provide more info about…

are you using well water ?

what do you mean by “hard water” ?

Are you using RO/DI water for water changes?

What are the parameters of your tank water?

Maybe I’m misunderstanding your question, but are you referring to your raw water, or your tank water? Your raw water is most likely “hard”, but would be purified by using an RO/DI unit, by removing the undesirable dissolved minerals, i.e. calcium, magnesium, sulfur, copper, etc. Using your purified RO/DI (‘0’ TDS) water and adding your salt mix into it, is making your water “hard” again, by adding back, in the appropriate amounts, some of these elements, i.e. calcium and magnesium, trace elements, etc.

I have had my salt water tank for 10 years and have been using tap water for all my water changes over those years. About 2 months ago I had my water tested for everything the Aquarium Shop had in its arsenal to check to see what is wrong with my salt water tank. I have been loosing corals within a month of purchasing new items, which I have just recently started doing. Everything was fine except the test for hard water. It showed that I had a very high level of “Hard Water”. There are items for sale in the shop to bring the levels of pH, Ammonia and Nitrates/Nitrites, but couldn’t find anything to fight the war against “Hard Water”. Is there anything on the market? Or do I just have to do water changes frequently until the levels come down? Help? :-?

I’d recommend an RODI filter. You’ll run your hard water through it, and it will eliminate nearly all impurities, leaving you with clean, pure water. Tap water, especially well water, usually contains high levels of impurities and contaminants, as well as metals (copper for instance) that are very detrimental to coral.

what are your Calcium and Magnesium levels and what are they saying your dKH is at now ?

And agree 100% with Craig get a RODI, both treated water systems and well water can change over time and without notice.

Welcome to the site. As some have said an ro water system will strip the tap water of all the chemicals. I’m sure you have had great success with tap water over the years, but today’s tap water has more crap then you can imagine. Most of our tap water is treated and has numerous chemicals. The ro is going to be a starting point. Once this is installed your going to need to do several water changes over several weeks depending on volume of water.
But to answer you question no there isn’t anything to add to you tank to remove the hardness(other then ro water).
