Heaters should not blow bubbles

I looked in my tank today and the heater was making bubbles. Tiny, little, slow, bubbles. Turned out it had a crack in it. I picked up one of the Marineland heaters to replace it. Mine was a Hydor, anyone heard of any issues with them?

Not yet, so far i have heard good things about them

If you do a search there are about 3 threads on this board where I believe people were urging people to use hydor because there were some random threads on the web where marineland heaters exploded. Swore you had commented in those threads. I have probably about 25 or so marineland stealth heaters working in my basement. After years of use I have found a couple eventually add a little electricity in the water and need to be replaced. I haven’t found a better more affordable option yet.

+1 i have probably a half dozen or so and have never had an issue. as a matter of fact they have proven to be very safe IME. i have let them run dry more than once and they shut off with no issues. i know a big complaint against them is no visible light indicating that they are on but it doesnt bother me at all.

as far as the stories about these getting stuck on a high temp and nuking a tank it can be easily avoided by using two heaters that are rated for half the tank size instead of one big heater. its good practice and will save your tank from over and under heating in the event of a heater failure. the logic is if one heater stops working you will still have a heater rated for half the tank volume that should keep it from plummeting and if one heater ramps up and stays on then the thermostat on the second heater will turn it off and you will have only one heater rated at half the tank size on full power which might elevate the temp but shouldnt nuke it.

Jon, I do recall the issues folks were having with the stealth heaters, I was just curious if anyone had any issues with the Hydors. Just to be clear, the heater that cracked was a Hydor, not a marineland.

I have allways used 2 ebo jager heaters together connected to a ranco temp controller…pretty much foolproof…
