Hello Everyone, I figured I would do a formal introduction of myself and my tank because I have posted on a few forums and figured it would be nice to be familiar with some more people!
So… My name is Jared, I run all my tanks with my girlfriend Lindsay and we love aquariums. We have done a 20g high, a 29g, I got my dad’s biocube 14 running well, we started a 37g in the spring, and this fall I am hoping to start a 39g cadlights tank all saltwater. (I had done plenty of freshwater before salt, but IMO NO comparison.)
We love clownfish, anemones, and of course all kinds of corals. We are relatively new to the hobby but as I stated we have had a lot of experience in the 8-10 months that we have been doing this. Lots of disappointments, and lots of happy moments… but if anything A LOT of learning experience that has come through mistakes (both good and bad) and a lot of answered questions by Charlie!
I will be adding some pictures of our 37g tank b/c that is all that is up now b/c we have been upgrading over time and selling old equipment. (HUGE Mistake… b/c we could have used a lot of that equipment, but as I said a lot of mistakes in the 8-10 months that we have been in this hobby.) Anyway, I will put some pictures up soon!
There’s a few pic’s, but when Lindsay Gets off work she will try and get a few more. It stinks b/c my guys anemone is closed up and her guys anemone is unhappy and just moved… (we just put new lighting on so they are getting use to it) but I will have more in the next few days!
This is my 37g. We have 4 false perc clowns (mated pair which is my original clowns, and Lindsay’s two), 1 Scooter Blenny… amazing little girl shes really pretty and fun to watch, two cleaner shrimp, umm… a bunch of snails, and i think thats it but I dont have it in front of me…
For Inverts: 3 anemones… all three are bubble tips, and my prettiest one is closed off behind a rock, and has been for a while… and like i listed above, the two shrimp and a bunch of snails.
For Corals… We have pulsing xenia, zoo’s (zoa’s but we like to call them zoos for some reason lol), a toadstool we got from a LR we bought, a bunch of different mushrooms, sun polyps, feather duster, and two types of green star polyps.
Then we just have a bunch of LR throughout the tank… and the two front pieces shouldn’t be there, but they are b/c im getting them coraline encrusted before I get back to delaware and set up my new tank lol.
I see you have my favorite little skimmer. the seaclone. What’s that? the 150? I got one of those and two of the 100’s running for years. they work pretty good with a little fine tuning. looks like yours is collecting some fine, dark gunk.
Thank you Ken, Its the 100, and it does a good job I must say… I use to have it on the back of my 29 and it worked well for that but had a small drip… lol but that doesn’t matter inside of a sump PBJ!
Umm And for the sun polyps, we just feed them the same things as the zoos, feather duster, and the mushrooms which might not really do much? but We got them off a piece of LR from the store… that we flipped over and had a bunch of them and they have done well ever since.
What we feed all of our stuff is Zooplanktos S Zooplankton from Brightwell Aquatics, and it seems to work? Everything grows, has good color and the thing we have noticed about the sun polyps is more importantly as to what we feed them is where we place them b/c we had them in the open for a bit, but now they are in a cavern type area and they like it much more.
We just bought a microinvert feed to try for everything and wanna see how that works for some of my corals even though they arnt invernts. We shall see… I am up to suggestions though
If you are fine with just keeping them barely alive feeding the tank what you mentioned in a decent quantity every other day may work. If you ever want to see them grow daily spot feeding with Mysis and a mixture of other things will just about be required.(which will mean a lot more water changes) These corals typically slowly starve to death in captivity unfortunately.
I c… Well that makes sense b/c ive seen it grab a few when i feed everyone else… I’m not very concerned about overfeeding b.c I do biweekly water changes and my levels are static… so do you chop the mysis up or do you just feed it whole? do you just spot feed and hope it grabs it or do you shoot it into the center? Just wondering Thank you for the info. As I said… i got it off a piece of LR from the LFS and flipped it over and boom I had a bunch of sun polyps. They seem healthy in my tank but haven’t grown much so that might be why. Thank you for the suggestions!
Ya I tried a few different lights but I have to get a new started b4 I can put a new bulb on b/c you have to pull the starter out once it has caused a flicker w/ any other light then it stays on… but that doesn’t seem like the safest way to run my lighting lol. (and its not very convent if you have it on an auto timer lol)
You will probably need a new fixture. The ballast in that light i sonly designed to fire a T12 NO bulb, it won’t adequately fire a T5 or Power Compact bulb.
All you really need for a fuge is a small shop light. Like this one.
those “sun polyps” look more like dendro’s to me… normally sun polyps r tubastrea. (could be wrong. just judging by the pic) feeding and care is pretty much the same, so no big deal really. just worth a lot more!! lol
Honestly I have no clue what they are lol… As I stated b4… they are off a small piece of LR I was gonna throw in my fuge, but then saw a bunch of yellow so I threw it in our main tank… They have grown since I got them and i figure feeding them the correct diet would probably help lol verdict_in
Nice tanks. They look very clean! I second what Jon said about feeding mysis to the sun or dendro. It really doesn’t matter which it is because they both should be fed frequently with meaty type foods. I fed my dendro 3 times a week with chopped krill, squid and mysis.
Thank you Ellen As soon as Lindsay gets back from vacation she is gonna try feeding them like Jon suggested and I’m sure they will like it a lot more than food they don’t really eat lol. Someone had talked about increase in bioload and worrying about levels going up but we keep our tanks clean so I’m not too worried And we have a great cleanup crew for w/e doesn’t get eaten.
We are really excited about the tank Ellen! We will be in contact again once Lindsay gets back on Saturday! Thank you again YahoO!
