I suspected something was up with 6 year old hippo when it stopped eating the three days ago. as an open swimmer that ranged around my tank all day long, has now become loner, wedging itself into spots and remaining motionless. the tang has not lost color and i see no telltale signs of ick. the only sign of something wrong besides not eating is the rapid breathing and when it moves, its really panicaly in its movements. like its trying to get away from somthing. the five other fish are fine, eating, swimming. parms of the tank are fine, a 10% water change was done on friday. water parms are as follows:
salinity 1.024, temp 76, nitite 0, nitrate undectable. my other tang (yellow) is fine and since the hippo is the biggest fish in the tank, no other is causing it stress. any ideas?
I’m not familiar with Tangs, but what size is your tank? How big is the hippo? Can you get it to eat at all by putting some nori (or w/e) onto a rock and leaving it in the tank? Sorry to hear this, hope the tang gets better!
When we put the skilter (some little POS skimmer/filter) on the babies tank Our hippo was acting like a weirdo hiding all the time not coming out even when we did feed I think the noise the Skilter made stressed her out maybe… But maybe that info might help you if you added anything to your tank.
They still make skilters? WOWSA!
Sorry, no help on your fish. I hope it gets better.
Anything new in the tank? Any algae issues?
Anything new externally? New surround sound on the TV by chance?

Not to talk smack on a product, but what a piece of junk! I put it together and it was making this horrible noise…then I looked it up, yep sounds pretty standard.
just an update, i freshwater dipped the hippo late yesterday for 3 minutes it seems to helped the breathing aspect but the hippo is still hiding and not eating, i have tried nori and i usally feed frozen mysis and enriched brine to the fish, it is still not eating.

Does the stomach look pinched?
try garlic extream or smash up some fresh garlic. it is soposed to encourage fish to eat

Nori should be the staple for this animal while the other items just a random treat. While they take meaty items such as brine and mysis the vast majority of their diet should be marine algae. In the wild they graze on rocks all day long looking for algae. The algae that grows in your tank will not be enough unless you have a 600g + tank with one tang and have the right types of algae growing.
What type of test kits are you using?
Hoping to hear a good update soon.
garlic garlic garlic!!! saved my blenny; as soon as that juice hit the water in his qt, he awoke from his 3 day fast and gobbled.
:-(" that evening i came home from work and found the fish had passed on. rip my hippo tang. never did figure out what had caused the fish to pass
sorry. that’s a shame.
Sorry to hear. I am sure there isn’t a soul that uses this forum who can not name several fish they have lost. It happens to all of us at some point.
Keep an eye on the other animals in your tank to make sure they are alright. Probably also best to do a water change now as well.
Aww sorry to hear about your fish!

Hey Jon,
I was always under the impression that hippo tangs actually consume more zooplankton in the wild as they grow. I feed mine nori 3-4 times a week, but mysis and NLS pellets are offered everyday. Correct me if I am wrong.
Sorry to hear you lost your fish. It is never easy when this happens.
That sucks, I hate loosing fish, especially a tang as they seem to have great personalities.
