High ph

My ph is 8.5 now after opening windows is this too high and how high is normal?

Maybe you covered this… last time calibrated? sounds pretty high. any ph up type stuff added? or just your regular regimen?

Yeah there were no changes just opened the windows is it dangerous? On and I do use a probe on the apex

The probe i know verdict_in, just wondering the last time it was calibrated with solution…7, 10.
…u know what i mean… don’t wise off and make me post your pic again ::rofl::

8.5 just seems hard to reach without kalk dosing ::thinking::
when i did a ph test in the past… outside, airstone in a jug of saltwater it reached a max of 8.34…but… the water wasn’t buffered with any sand or rock… ::thinking::

Is 8.5 normal for you… ever… seasonally? thought you were 8.1 to 8.3 ish usually ::thinking::

sounds like it’s time to calibrate again to me too

Yeah I’m with John and Frank. If you were at 8.5 things would be dying.

Try recalibrating. If that doesn’t work, try a new probe. How long has it been since it’s been replaced?

btw… i have 3 containers of calibration solution( 4, 7, 10) that dave (aonemarine) gave me awhile back… he works for the wa wa water co.

never opened specimen containers full, … i can bring them to the meeting if anyone wants to check their meters…
lmk

you know what you are gonna get it john lol my lovely avatar. i haven’t calibrated in a while but it has been creeping up slowly to 8.4 during the day now its 8.5 so who knows.

just checked it and the daylights went off it is 8.45 cleaned the probe and it went to 8.4. When i added the extra tanks it went up above what i had before so its all kind of new

i wouldn’t worry about it until you check it with calibration fluid

Actually read today in Sprung’s Reef Aquarium book that ~~“targeting natural levels around 8.3-8.5ph is often not necessary”. I am not sure where those natural numbers came from as I have always thought the reefs were typically 8.2-8.3, but… I don’t think 8.5 would kill.

That being said it is pretty unlikely that your tank is at 8.5 and this thread could have been ended shortly with John’s recommendation. Just calibrate the probe with 7 &10. If your software is up to date you could use your computer to do so or the display.

maybe thin down your alk dosing mix a little. thats the only thing you add that could bump it that high. I dont think ORP makes it go that high. but i dont think its that bad. is it? anything suffering.?

add a little plain, carbonated soda water, no sugar, quinine, phosphoric acid or other addatives. just plain soda water. its a mild carbonic acid solution. will bring down PH.

Or you could try closing the windows, eat Sauerkraut and beans and work on some swamp gas to bring it back down. just sit near the protein skimmer air intake. That should do it.

Lol that’s why it’s low with the windows closed gas ha ha. Nothing looks bad just high and I dose alk at night I stop the dosing in the am. I will calibrate I haven’t done it since I got it and they recommend once a month to 3
