Honeymoon is over and this is what I came home to and with.

I am finally back home as of 11pm last night from my honeymoon. Ready to add 3 ORA snowflake clownfish(scroll down for video) into the tank one being a premium grade A with the slight blue hue and a baby green polyp toadstool. I look at my tank and this is what I see…
daddy or baby clownfish - mia(canopy was on the tank and overflow checked)
raging watermellon chalice -dead
big ora orange cap - dying
frog spawn - huge air bubble in it
green trumpet - 2 heads dead, 4 injured
LE UFO micromussa went from 8-10 polyps to 3 and not looking good
Green trach brain - showing skeleton (I have had this since I got into saltwater)
couple frags in the sand bed.
My 20g tank is now covered in hair and cyano algae
My 75g tank the temp was at 84 so the peak temp it hit is unknown, sock filter completely clogged so water was coming out of the sump and onto the floor.

Not to happy today and ready to buy a led unit to cut temps down. No longer using the sock filter but am going to add a poly filter. Running carbon and phosgaurd for now.

Big momma has been put into the fuge since she is now all alone and she attacked my maroon clownfish (which died later on because of the wounds) I tried to add a few weeks back. Now the 4 stripe damsel is picking on the snowflakes and the littlest one won’t come out.

Well here is a video of the new clowns I am pretty sure after researching online that the one is a premium grade A. All are supposed to be ORA that I got from a lfs in Maine.

what happened? didnt you have anyone looking in on the tanks? or leave the AC on?

I had someone watching the tank and pets for the whole time I was gone. Supposedly he didn’t notice anything except one tank getting cyano and hair algae the day before we were coming back. I even typed a chore list for the tank and showed him everything that was very important to keep an eye on so if I had problems I could have called a fish store to find someone who could have checked on it and maybe help save it in time.

I put the fan back on to blow across the light fixture and only did t5’s today and the temp dropped to 79 already. I am hoping the things in danger of dying pull through whatever happened. sucks seeing things dying and my happily married clownfish not together anymore.

Well time to head over to DPA to see what I can buy  I am going to get some carbon and new socks and poly filters and whatever else. Then I will setup a qt tank for the stuff in the 20g tank.

question though.
When I go to do a barebottom tank I use the water from the 20g tank and not just fresh. Is that correct? I am setting up a 10g tank with sump.

The water itself is not where you beneficial bacteria is living, it’s on your live rock and surfaces. So unless you are trying to add some phosphates for food I see no sense in using old water.

I feel your pain and frustration, I’ve been there. What one person thinks is “doing fine” is a disaster to us. It could be worse, at least you didn’t have something more catastrophic like a power failure. On the up side, a reason to get new stuff.

I was under the impression that putting them in new salt might cause it to go through some sort of a cycle. and wanted to make it a nice easy transition with the least amount of stress.

Very true Scott. I am already planning to buy new stuff. I know I am due for some updates in the members tank section. Working on getting the lighting and reef controller and now that I have this new clownfish I will be focusing on setting up a section in the basement for breeding after much more research. The wife is already approving of me adding more tanks haha.

No one had any poly filters. So if anyone has any spare poly filter let me know please. Also I could use some bio balls don’t have any and want to put some after the fuge part like in Rosti’s fuge since we have the same one.

No way to bypass a cycle as it would be almost imposable to match the balance between the tanks, fastest way is to seed rock, substrate or filters in the old system for a few days, then add them to the new tank than you will just need to wait for it to balance itself.

I have bio balls (plenty) and probably poly filter. LMK

you can always add bacteria to boost the fitler. i do that at water changes anywho.

Once the honeymoon’s over everything goes to crap ::hitsthefan::

::rofl:: ::rofl:: ::rofl:: ::rofl::

That sux jeff, you’ll get it straightened out…
btw how auto-mated is your setup? did the tanksitter have much to do? or just a glorified ATO and fish feeder?

All he had to do was turn the valve on twice a day for the rodi unit which is connected to a float so he could not over fill and it would not waste water. It was wasting to much water if you left it on. 1 gallon dripping in the sump would equal 20+gallons wasted. The 20 gallon tank he just had to watch the line and add like 2 cups a day if that.
And feed the fish thats all.

I am surprised no one commented on that beautiful ORA Snowflake I posted a video of. I got one hell of a deal I could not pass up on for that guy:)

The tanks are pretty much back to normal conditions I have a feeling it was mainly due to a heat spike. Something I forgot to tell the tank sitter to watch out for.
Some of the corals that were receding are gone. I lost half of a trumpet colony, UFO Micromussa is trying to survive but I don’t think it will. and some other stuff was lost. Not a ton of things though.

You can buy and install a shut off valve for your RO unit, so that when the float valve shuts off the water to the tank, the pressure will build up in the RO water line and shut off your RO unit. No wasted water and completely automatic.
A very good investment!!!

I do have plans on upgrading the ato after I purchase a Neptune Apex unit. The way I want that unit looks like its going to be around $900 :~S
Since I have not found any good used led lighting I am going to make my own which will save money for the apex unit :). That will be another thread after I start ordering.

So did the heat kill everything?because I have a chiller I’m not using if interested

I am not running the halides anymore and I opened the ac vent in the basement since for some reason it was closed. My tank has not been over 80 degrees now even when the light fixture was all the way down on the tank maybe 1" from the water. I will be upgrading to LED within the month. I have a few units in mind I would like to buy just to be done with it. If I don’t buy them for the prices I want I will make my own diy or buy the triple puck kits from rapidled.com

I also ended up rescaping my whole 75g tank just to remove 1 damsel fish. It was being a bully everytime I added a fish and his time came to be kicked out along with my momma clown fish that was also very aggressive.

I did not lose to much but here is a list that I could figure out.
I lost most of my bright green trumpet colony,
Random acro frag I was keeping from a colony I lost due to rtn-gone
I think it was a mummies eye or 3g chalice? I was nursing it back to health from a previous member who moved to texas- gone
Pagoda frag-gone
ORA peach digitata frags - gone “Got digi” LOL
2x Clown fish 1 breeding dad and a runt - gone
Purple monti cap around 4x6"+ on a big rock- gone
ORA red monti cap 4x8" mostly gone a couple small spots still alive
LE ufo micromussa from Dan Rigle
Trachphylia brain is receding still( I have had this coral since the first weekend in the hobby)
