Hey guys I have some old live rock that I want to add to my system (2 peices about 8 lbs est). Can I just add it, or put it in my sump or do i need to cure it first?
If I do need to cure it how should i go about it?
Thanks for all the help.

tell us about OLD UNLIVE rock
Sounds like you got yourself a brick YahoO
give it a good rinse in some old water change water and put it in. If it is truly dead already then there is nothing on it to decay and cause any spikes so you’ll be fine just adding it. besides, if it’s only 8 pounds it wouldn’t screw things up too bad anyway.
Thanks sir. Oh and I love the tank i got from you. It is really hard to get going right(like you warned) but I found a good thread for corner tanks. I finally am settled in house after holidays and ready to get this thing going.
I am fixing up my old 55 to make a sump/fuge. It will obviously be next to the tank. I think i am going to build an enclosure and put one of my 30 as a qt.
Woohoo new projects!
If it’s old and dry not live rock any more just base rock.
if u are pretty sure it’s “dead”, and u arent concerned about keeping any bacteria… y notboil it or vinegar solution rinse it? figuring everything is dead anyhow, turn it into base rock before adding. just being extra safe i guess.
yes i would boil it and scrub then rinse real good. i was waiting on details of DEAD before i posted. i have alot of rock in tank so i boil any new rock i get unless i know whos tank it was in. the only problem i have had in two and half years was small aptasias by following this rock cleansing and aptasia came from one rock i did not boil. make it base rock to be sure there is not rottening stuff left…
Most of the rock I have in my 95g came from my neighbor who had it stored dry in his garage for over a year. Dry dead rock can leach stored phosphates back into your tank. What I did was soak it for 3 days with a 50/50 solution of viniger and ro water. The acid causes the phophates to leach out. Then I scubbed it and rinsed, then I cured it in a tub for 6 weeks. Since you are only talking about 8lbs you can skip the curing, but I would definitely soak it or boil it.
I think I will boil it. (When the wife is sleeping)
It is has been out of water for about a year. It was in my old 30 gallon for about a 3 month before i got my 55 at the time. I kept that tank up and running and it cured but I never put it in the new tank due to configuration.
