I cant find razor blades to scrape algae off my glass anyone got any ideas where to find them?
Either use Kent Marine pro scrapers or real razor blades which you can buy in big packs at Lowes(either 50 or 100 packs I think?). Real razor blades are cheap and nothing is sharper, but they will cut the silicone on the edges if you are not careful and are single use only.(rust up within a couple hours, do not use more than one day!) Pro scrapers won’t rust if you take care of them, but will eventually bend and become dull after a lot of use.
Trust me on this, it is a topic I have a LOT of experience with.
Opps forgot to metion you want the yellow pro scrapers not the red(made for acrylic).
I use a small stainless steel spatula with a short wooden handle i bought at the dollar general store. i put a nice edge on it with a sharpening stone. it works real good on the heavy stuff that grows on my glass. I use it on my acrylic working frag tanks too.
If you use the blades from Lowes or Home Depot. Be aware that some brands coat their blades with a lubricant of some sort. Before I use them, I normally let them soak in a vinegar/water solution and wipe them down to make sure the lubricant isn’t still on them before dunking them in my tank. I don’t know that it removes 100% of whatever it is, but I know there is a noticeable difference after I have cleaned them.
I never use blades that have a significant amount of lubricant on them. The ones in the large package at Lowes do not have a significant amount. They might have something, but my fingers are super sensitive and I have never felt anything and never had ill effects using them for fragging or glass cleaning without even rinsing them. I’ve used hundreds of them for years.
yes i use the same ones as jon. never felt any oil on the ones in the 100 pack from lowes. but i know that there are some coated with oil for rust protection.
The ones hare harbor freight have TONs of crap on them. I gave them away. I wouldn’t want to use them for anything. They were cheap, but rust up faster than the ones from Lowes even with the coating.
Yep I get mine at Home Depot for like 6 bucks… you get 100 and they do the best job by far (great for fragging too)
