Ick

I just saw some ick on my clown for the first time. WHAT DO I DO? I don’t know if I can remove him from the tank. I haven’t seen any on the other fish yet. Should I leave him in there? What can I do to help him get rid of it?

Thanks

When is the last time you added a fish? Is he new? Are you sure it’s ick? Clowns get some spots sometimes from playing rough with their hosts. IMO the best remedy for ick is to feed really well, and do a waterchange. I never treat for ich (other than garlic), and I never lose fish to it.

He had been in the tank for a few months. I just added a blue tang fromt he GB this last weekend. He got about five dots on his fin (rised). I just did a water change yesterday. How do I feed it garlic?

It usually only comes out with stress. To feed garlic, I usually soak some pellet food in the garlic extreme liquid. I think they have it at Petsmart in Dover. There will be a chorus of people who disagree, so this is only my response. If you feed them well, and the water is clean, their immune system will get rid of the ich. I’d give it a day or two and check again.

How long to I soak it for and can the other fish in the tank eat it too?

The Hippo tang seem to be the most Ick prone creature on the planet. I have seen Ick like white spots on my hippo tang whenever she was stressed. The spots came and went with stress. The clown may be stressed about the new tank mate and the Tang had a rough week. I also would recommend a little extra food and also quality frozen. People swear by garlic and I figure it can’t hurt but would be more inclined to use a good vitamin (selcon) to soak the food. Some quick frozen or blanched spinach/broccoli or a banana slice would also be nice. I would also offer vitamin soaked nori rubber banded to a rock to stimulate the natural picking nature of the tang.

It could be Ick but I would wait to see it they disappear and return again in larger numbers. This would be a true sign of Ick. The good news about Ick is you have some time to help the fish.

In a small bowl put the food and some liquid vitamin and or a small amount of garlic extract. Let it stand for a bit (10 min) to soak in and then feed. This works better with frozen food then flake IMO. All the fish can eat as it is the same food just better.
