ID spots on rock (no pic yet)

Ok need some help IDing this please.
Basically it looks like there are little sesame seeds on a few of the rocks in the tank. They don’t seem to be moving or disappearing, but they have/may have spread to other rocks. I didn’t notice them on the rocks before, but now they are on about 3 different rocks. It just looks like sesame seeds on the rock. I’ll try to get up some pics tonight. Anyone have any ideas?

Little research would have answered my question…

Looks like they are nerite snail eggs.

+1 on the nerite eggs. i got tons of em on the glass and rockwork. they definately know how to use their time on earth wisely! lOl

Glad you found it and posted again. When I saw sesame I thought sunflower and I was going to say it was a mini clam if it is attached on the side.

A couple of weeks ago I was cleaning a tank and the tech before me must have mixed his water change a little low as the salinity in the tank was lower then we try to keep reef tanks at. I added a higher salinity mix to the tank and triggered all of the nerites to start laying egg sacks all over the tank. The client thought it was neat so it really worked out well in the end.

That’s pretty cool, it is interested that on the glass they are the squiggly lines and on the rocks they are the ‘sesame seeds’.

How big are these ‘eggs’? Are they the size of a sesame seed, or just the general shape? the ones in the pictures on 3reef.com look like they are a pretty good size, maybe the size of a small pumpkin seed? I have LOADS of nerite snail eggs on my glass and on my rocks, even on some of my astrea snails… they are small, almost perfectly round, or just a tiny bit eliptical, and are that shape regardless of where they are laid. If i had to give them a size, i’d say just a little smaller than 1/8th inch in diameter and they come off the glass very very easily.

As for the squiggly line that people are talking about, I have read that those come from Cerith snails, not nerites… I have only seen those on vertical surfaces, like my side glass and the black overflow in my tank.

I think you might be right about that…I confuse them, that makes sense though, the ceriths leave the squiggles and the nerites leave the sesame seeds

My ‘eggs’ are about the size of a sesame seed. The ones on 3reef, look to me to be about the size of a sesame seed as well (look at the fish). I’ve not seen any of the ‘eggs’ on the glass.

Yea, I know that the ones that I was seeing in my tank, looked slightly different than that, even on the rock. They actually had what looks to be like a yolk in the center of them, here are a few pics from what I had at the time, and still have right now.

In the one picture you can kind of see a yolk.

Yep those look just like the ones on my rock. I haven’t seen any on the glass yet and on the rock its hard to pick out a ‘yolk’ but I’ll do some searching and see if they got some on the glass.
