Is 10x turnover really a good rate

I now have 3 Korolia 4, 1 Korolia 2, and a nano in the tank now. I also have a quietone 3000 hooked up to the tank. Is that too much? I have about 100 gallons including sump. I think that adds up to almost 5000 gph. There is only 500 going directlly out of the tank.

You should be able to answer your own question by looking at your tank. If everything looks healthy and happy i would say its just fine!

For tanks that are drilled and use a sump for filtration i like to make a distinction between flow and turnover. Turnover is the amount of water that leaves my tank(i.e, filtered) and the flow is the amount of water that is pushed around in my tank(i.e powerheads). Of course your returns can count as flow, but your flow doesnt count as turnover. With that said, i keep my turnover very low. Im guessing right around 3oogph for a 100g+ system and my flow i adjust depending on the type of tanks. Most of our filtration is cyclical(skimmer, reactors, etc) so i dont think a high turnover is beneficial.

Back to your original question, for me its simply too subjective to give you a good answer. It can be very tricky to get the right amount of flow in a tank. My best advice is to make small changes, watch your animals, and give them plent of time to adjust. Things got a lot easier for me when i went the wavemaker route. With wavermakers and conrtollable powerheads its almost plug and play.

Yeah I want to do the wavemaker but I have a corner tank and I have read that it could cause the stand to collapse because of the akward flow.

I was pushing to more of a turnover in the tank and to keep the flow to the sump more at it 5 or 6x so the skimmer and others could actually work on filtration.

Logan what is that logo you have i almost passed out looking at it. LOL

If putting a wavemaker in ANY tank could cause the stand to collapse then its time for a new stand!! ;D

The avatar is from an anime called Ghost in the Shell.

Yeah I thought so too but I didn’t want to be that guy who said oh yeah right and then come home to 3 inches of water. LOL

I have to side with Shawn and say you have to be the judge. If I was standing in front of your tank I could tell by certain microfuana in certain areas(if the system was sustained for a while like it is). Also if you bought all the animals as frags from me and I know them intimately I might be able to tell you that certain ones look as if they would appreciate more flow. Certain species of coral with in the same genus can have different colors or have polyps that open up more or less, so you really have to get to know your own corals.

The factors in flow are practically limit less and it is not really easy to consider them all. Focus on major dead spot problems where lots of detritus settles. Try to be able to identify all of your corals at least to genus, so you can research them a little and find out more about there feeding, light, and flow requirements. There is too many factors to really completely answer this post accept for a “yes, no, and maybe… it depends”?

IF the wave maker was set up to push all in one direction, then switch to all the opposite direction, i could see a failure. but really, u arent setting up 6 powerheads on each side of the tank are ya??? besides, ALL of the powerheads arent pointed at the surface right? waves are sometimes confused to only include water movement on the surface, where in fact (im sure some of biologists can chime in here) they are far below the surface also. i guess the point i am making here is, u really gotta TRY to push enough flow back and forth to damage a tank. ESPECIALLY a corner tank, which are usually pretty stable compared to standard rectangle.

Hey russ - generally I would think that is a LOT of flow - but that is also a deep tank and difficult to hit al areas with movement. I think (without seeing it) that you’d be fine.

Didn’t you pick up a Reef Keeper a while back? You can run your existing Koralias off of it to create “random” flow patterns. I think the “wave maker will collapse the stand” myth is referring to a Wave2K which pushes a TON of water in one direction at one time.

I had never really heard that a wave maker could cause that, but then again the term “wave maker” could mean a million different things. I could see a carlson surge device, or what ever you call it, causing some ciaos.(Yet still part of me really wants to try something like that. Will have to test when the gf is out of town)

I agree, it all comes down to your tank and what you keep. I have a 25x turnover rate in my reef, but a 65x rate in my FO tank.

I just set the thing up and it is great. I got the lite 3. So i am going to try it. What the hell!!! (famous last words)

The only problem with the tank as you know is getting to that back corner. I think i have it now. I just bought some sps and they seem to be doing fine with the movement. Zoa are doing well also. Softies no problem.

I just setup a calc reactor and lets see how this works. I got a good deal on it. I don’t want to dose but rather enjoy it as much as I can. I have a 55 frag tank, light, and sump. i bought. I need to set that up but I bought it used and it needs a good cleaning.

LOL…Baby we must have bought a faulty tank…

Big C man you told me about the c. algae on the front glass but that is a job to keep it under control. Most people beg to get that growth.

At least you can’t say I didn’t warn you.

I can say but i would be lying!!!
