So I found out the line of reef octopus, speedwave and jebao dc (certian models) pumps are the generation 1 waveline pumps. All are the same specs, same housing, same control, same impeller. Reef octopus uses the pump in a skimmer which is now discontinued. Not sure the details yet but the pump is listed as “retired” on coralvue’s web page. Heres the question. If you use the same pump & venturi and throw it in a very similar skimmer body, Will it have similar performance? Logic says yes. Example: Reef octopus POV1 skimmer or Diablo dcs 150 versus this jebao version:

So would you think its comprable? Bad english aside it seems decent. Having a skimmer using this pump now its been a beast. Other thoughts?
Just because it not a top of the line product, it doesn’t mean it will not work just as good as the top of the line product. However, sometime you do get what you pay for. I myself never had any bad experience with any of no name product or rather not top of the line product.
How does the saying goes, if it walks and quack like a duck, then it’s a duck.
When Octopus first came out, I bought one of their first HOB skimmers and it came with a no-name pump. Can’t remember the name of it to save my life right now but anyway. It crapped out on me after around the 4 - 5 month mark, started overheating and shutting itself off. After a lot of research, I found out that a Sedra pump had basically the same exact spec that I needed so I bought it. I had to come up with an adapter from the pump outlet to the skimmer’s intake but it skimmed better with the Sedra and ran for many years after.
I know the Red Dragon pumps made by Royal Exclusive are the exact same thing as the Laguna pond pumps, with a couple of variations, but the motor and housings are the same and can be interchangeable if you have some DIY knowledge.
I would say if the skimmer body is very similar (height, body diameter, neck diameter) then you may be just fine. The only way to know for sure is to go for it and be prepared to make some adjustments and tweaks here and there.
You should be fine. Since it’s a DC pump, you could always adjust the flow rate if you need to.
I got the new pump for an ASM G2 today so I likely won’t but this skimmer.
But this discussion does bring to mind something. If 2 different companies use the same pump, say a PSK1000 on their skimmer, with same shape & volume body, it would be pretty similar performance right? One company charges $300 less for theirs. Am I just getting a break due to questionable labor & customer support? Less advertising? Name reconizition? All of this aside, Parts would be available for the pump from either company. I guess it doesn’t matter if you are willing to deal with a shady warranty.
