Kenya Tree

I have a fairly large, two trunk’d specimen of Kenya tree. Its over a hear old. Either a Tank is pulling pieces off of it, or its budding off of itself?

Either way, the wayward pices are going to be trashed unless someone wants one? Not entirely sure how to get it to stick to a frag plug…can I glue the bottom of it, or just rubber band it for a few days?

You’re doing something right Rob if your KT is budding. The buds are very sticky persay. Once it leaves the mother colony and find a right place to stay it will stick it self and start to grow.

I’ll take a piece or two from you for my seahorse tank. No need to glue to anything. I’ll just glue it to the rock I have. Thanks Rob.

Please don’t trash it. Just donate it to your LFS. I’m sure someone will buy it from them and you doing them a favor.

I would be interested in a piece or two also but my nitrates are out of whack!

Don’t worry Karen. KT are very hardy and very, very hard to kill.

My nitrates are just now being able to be read! They were well over 200ppm and my KT’s are doing just fine…They’ve been growing the entire time, no worries the will do just fine for ya

A dont forget I had those kenya trees die on me before! From what I could figure is the rock they were on were full of aiptasia. That was when I first started and didnt know what aiptasia was. If they are fine in high nitrates then I will take some. Are you coming to the meeting?

Ok, so hmmm…I guess I need to get my YouTube on for how to mount kenya frags. Yeah, they are sticky as hell A! Anyone is welcome to have them, I just can’t guarantee that they’ll be available by Monday. If the process is easy, I’ll have at least 2 of them available for free. Honestly…I have frag plugs, but haven’t had anything grow out to the point of fragging. Here are some quick iPhone shots of the Kenya and one of the buds that popped off. I’ve thrown 3 of them out recently… SORRY!

Oh and REMEMBER!!! I do currently have flatworms. So you’ll want to dip/check for any on the plug if you want one. They’re the red planaria, harmless, but they get ugly if/when they get out of hand. My Melenaurus Wrass is doing a great job of keeping them in their place so far.

Tank is 90gallon. if that helps with size reference. The colony is probably about 8" around?

Karen (nerak?), A, The two I currently have are yours if you want them.

A, I imagine you’ll be at the meeting Monday, so I’ll have yours unattached to a plug.

Karen, would you like yours the same. Pretty safe to say that there is almost zero risk of flatworms if you want it unattached to a plug, as i have not seen them on ANY of the corals, just the rock/substrate.

If u have any more I would love a piece

Thanks Rob, I’ll take mine unattached. Yes, I’ll be at the meeting.

Nerak / Black Tang, will either of you be at the meeting on Monday? If not, I’m just bringing one frag for A.

I will be at the meeting. There is no chance of flatworms hitchhiking is there? If no chance then I will take mine unattached as well. Thanks

I’ll make it unattached. yeah the flatworms don’t crawl on the kenya tree coral itself, but they would/could be on the frag plug as it sat in my tank.

I’ll be at meeting

those with high nitrates, i think these kenyas will lower your nitrates It seemed when I had mine they would use them up if they don’t then they really don’t care

thats a plus if it will help with the nitrates

yeah i think they will it seemed like it when i had a lot

If you worry about the little red FWs , a 15 second dip in RO water wipes em right out. Ive always dipped most corals in RO if i thought those little buggers might be on them. no problems … works on all acros , no harm adn most zoos. maybe not some delicate soffies. but Kenya tree? No problem. its got a tough, leathery skin.

Oh great! I will do that then. Thanks Ken.
