Could someone please explain the reason why led flashlights don’t shine out as far as a regular flashlight? If you shine someone in the face the led is so bright, but when you shine it away from you it doesn’t illuminate as good as a standard flashlight. LEDs are visible farther away too.
it’s just the focal point, some of the cheaper leds flashlights have a very short focal point, due to not using focusing reflectors and lens
Even with a focused beam the distance is short
I believe, and I really do not know much at all about this, the LEDs themselves can either spread the light wide or focus it.(at least the cheap ones used in electronic devices as indicators lights and many flashlights)
I swore there used to be diagrams on the radioshack LED packages or website that showed the spread the LEDs have.
Perhaps it’s the 4-7mm lens they reference.
I also found this about “beams”:

Again, I know diddly about this kind of stuff anymore, but may give you a starting point to google around more.
Take a read here answers most of the questions.
Hudz that’s a great read! As I said led is briter and better!
Oh yeah, candle power forum is an off shoot of Craigs old LED test site:
the complete history of LED flashlights and stuff.
Yup, its about focus. incandescent bulbs are focused to a pin point, with a narrow area lit at a distance. LEDs put out more light per watt and they take advandage of that by making a wider, smoother focused area of illumination. but the can be focused to a pin point too, like in a mag light.
Dunk, those 300 lumen Teralux lights we bought are great at lighting a broader area like my whole back yard at a pretty good distance, like 100 feet . an incandescent mag light will give you a little 10 foot area at that distance, at full focus, about the same brightness. and yellow.

This is what I’m talking about. The way a normal light lights an object, it lights it up better and at a greater distance. I guess it’s very hard to compare due to them being evenly powered. I just think of the mini mag lights the standard one lit up pretty good then the led version or upgrade came out, they were bright but not as useful as the standard. I thought it was because they had a cool color and narrow spectrum that made the object we lit up look weird and it wasn’t bright like standard bulbs
My led flashlight goes all the way down the street but it also uses a cree led. That is how I found out who cree was. It is all about quality. Spend the extra money and you can get one hell of a led flashlight.
I’d have to see it Tim ::
Ken gave me a little led flashlight awhile back. This thing is amazing, and it shines pretty far. Its really impressive what one little led and 2 AA batteries can do YahoO
