We are upgrading from a 75g to a 125g and need new lights. We currently have T5HO 4 bulb but we want to get LEDs for our new investment. What brand LED do you own and how do you like it? Anything special I should look for during my search? Anybody use no name brands? Any other info you can offer would be great. Thanks in advance ::
i am using vho/led on one t5/led on another led only (chinese) on one side of a 75 and halide on the other side the led only works but has less pe and slower growth. thats my experience with that version. colors are nice but not as good as the vho or t5 and if i move a coral under the led’s they look great just lose vividness over time
There are so many out there now and it really depends on how much you want to spend and of course what you’re looking for. One thing to look for is getting it full spectrum fixture. However, I have heard from some people that they had good growth and colors with just the blue and white leds chinese made fixture that you can get from ebay.
The reasonable ones that I know of are the AJMs, reef radiance, reef breeders, ocean revive. Then of course your top of the line are the eco tech radion, orphek, pacific sun led and many more.
I personally have use AJM full spectrum and never had any issue. Corals were growing and the colors were nice.
With 125g you can get away with two set of fixtures with 80-90 degrees lens or no lens since 125 are not that deep.
Everyone on here will give you their opinions. It’s just up to you to research and decide for your self of what you want.
I too have used the AJM fixtures and they are great. I am currently running 2 reefbreaders and 1 ajm on my 210.
I think they grow corals pretty well but as A said, its all up to what you want to spend. The reefbreaders have more colors mixed into their layout as opposed to the AJM. Ive used both and they both are great.
I’m running 2 no-brand dimmable Chinese fixtures and am getting better growth and coloration than with my MH. Dimmable is very important IMO bc it’s very easy to bast the corals with too much light with LED’s and you can dial in the spectrum you like. I got mine from a company off Ebay. I was able to layout which colors I wanted on which circuit too, all I had to do was send them a drawing and they built it to my specs (think buildmyled.com but Chinese). With lenses it cost around $170-180/fixture. I saw some on Ebay with lenses last week for $155.
Here’s my thread about hacking them if your interested.

I have 3 pro 240 reef radiance lights and they are real nice, fully programable / dimmable. I love the fixture and the built in controller, one cord, no dials and can be programed to change up to every 10 minutes but not the fastest process. AI and Radiums are alot easier to program but there also much more expensive. 3 of these lights cover my 300 where I would need 6 of the AI's or Radiums.
The only issue I have with the light is I would like to see more purple color out of it, not the fault of the light or the design just more of my personal prefference. Rick from the company actually offered to take these back and have another set custom built to my specs but I think it is easier to take off some of the whites out and solder in some more purples.
