Perhaps since the lion fish are likely here to stay… something will evolve to take advantage of this food source and keep them in check.

Naw, the better solution is let every Bubba know they taste better than catfish, bass or chicken. and give them one of these new cook books. I Guaran-dang-tee they will go extinct in our coastal waters in just a few years.

Every bass boat on the east coast will be out fishing the reefs for lionfish.
Say: YAHOO!!
dunno about anything actually evolving that’d eat them. we still have canada geese by the ton, starlings by the billions, and kudzu in enormous quantities. no natural predators is a difficult thing to overcome.
btw, did you know that the reason we actually have the european starlings here is b/c some idiot in the 19th century wanted to have every bird mentioned in shakespeare’s plays in the usa. no raptor eats them or has decided to try, and that’s theprob. i see no difference between those and the lionfish, but remain hopeful.
No predator to eat Geese in the USA? Could it be because we hunted down every large cat, chopped up every large snake, skinned every bear, and beat gators to death? The ocean is a little different then the back yard. Granted red necks in lower Delaware, and else where, still kill sharks, but perhaps there is something. Fish also reproduce in much larger numbers and grow to maturity a lot faster then mammals and large reptiles.
It isn’t going to happen over night, but things in the ocean are a little more… fluid.
Difference has to do with K species and R species I believe. In some aspects you can think of many fish a little more like insects then bears. If the conditions are right for bears to do well it will take many many years for their numbers to increase. If conditions are good in the Newark Dinner the roaches will show up the next day.
Sadly it isn’t the case for all for all aquatic animals and when morons kill whales because they think it will help them by more likely to have a boy vs. a girl or have more kids or when morons think killing baby sharks will help them catch more prized sport fish… whales and sharks don’t recover as quickly as roaches or tangs.
I didn’t see this before:
This species of scorpion fish may not be native to the Caribbean, but perhaps one of our locals can pick up this tasty diet as well.
Ken sadly I don’t think humans are capable of hunting a predator like this to extinction. Most of the species we have gotten close to hunting to extinction I don’t believe were solitary predators. I may be wrong though. I don’t think it will be that easy. Glad there are people making efforts though.
When’s the last time you caught an atlantic sturgeon?
