Longballz84 Nano, Planted, and 55 gal. Marine Tanks

So, i finally got a cam to use…a pink one…my GF’s, but its better than the blackberry…anyway…here we go…

this is the nano i just started working on…at max. cap. it can hold 7-8 gals. i have a built in overflow with a chamber in the back that will act as the filter…this has cut the volume of water down to about 4 max. in the display portion…

the in tank overflow…

18" t-5 for $25, reason i got motivated to make this…

Here are a couple pics of the 55…as some of you may remember i almost cried when i got my house sprayed for those bugs last summer and my tank crashed…well here are the new pics…

i took out every bit of LR and drilled it with a concrete bit…

all the corraline that died is back

encrusting sps and some zoas

the fuge…covered

crappy drawing, lol, but i cant drill the 55, so this is the overflow design, hasnt failed in 2 years…on the top on the overflow i have an aqualifter…

20 gal. long planted tank

Nice tanks. how do you anchor the plants into the sand?

there is actually about 50lbs of sand in the planted tank, and under that i have a lot of mineral mud…so i pretty much just push the plants down, or remove sand from an area, put the plant in and replace the sand…

all of these are macros so they dont really need to sand to grow it seems from what im learning…

i will also try the fishing line method here shortly with the caulerpa to get it to cover a few rocks…

i also forgot to list the life…

55…

2 tomato clowns…
1 sailfin blenny/Barnacle Blenny
tons of hermits
tons of snails
1 limpet
1 chiton
1 peppermint shrimp
mixed reef, mostly softies, slowly converting to sps/lps
20 gal. fuge…skimmer…some kinda mag. pump +3 K1’s

planted tank
3 hermit crabs
1 red pistol shrimp
1 flame scallop
2 peppermint shrimp
cheap pump (probley 100 max. at 4’)+cheap powerhead…

nano
sand…
water…
even cheaper pump…

Looks nice! So you don’t need any bracing for the nano tank? Why did you pick the dimensions you picked on the nano?

from what i have read Ian, i should be ok without bracing on that tank, because of the height i built it…as long as its not more than 30 galls at the height it is, i shouldnt have to brace it…well see…

also i made it the length to fit the light perfectly, and i didnt want it too deep…i wish i made the overflow chamber a bit skinnier…but on the next project i have a couple ideas that will made it even sweeter…

instead of having the pump come over the in tank overflow, im just going to drill a small hole into it, hook the pump up to the hole, and let it cascade down that way…if u follow what i mean

Yes, I follow that would be much cleaner and nicer looking imo. The tank is all non tempered glass? Any low iron glass? Looks great BTW

Glad you got pics up. Tanks look nice! Really like the little nano.

Do none of the hermits seem to cause problems in the planted tank? What color legs do they have? Thinking about sea grass at all?

Ian, I know the glass isn’t tempered, but i dont know what low iron glass is? please enlighten me…lol

i was actually debating cutting the silicone out, and drilling the tiny hole…it wouldn’t push me back and because im not near ready to stock it yet…

I have two left handed hermits in there Jon, and five red scarlets…if ur worried about the scallop, so am I…actually im going to move it downstairs after i get off here…

You would pay for more for low iron glass, it is basically what ‘starfire’ glass is, that is just a brand name. Low iron makes it ‘clearer’ to look through with less of a greenish tint.

For left handed, are they Zebra hermits or does it have orange/brown legs with one large black and white claw. I was more wondering if the hermits were eating any of your macros.

Are you feeding phytoplankton for the scallop?

they have the orange/brown legs+claw u described…I have been watching and they arent touching any of them yet…at first they were becoming a pain in my other tank because they are a kind of big.

I watch the tank normally at night and they seem to pick right around the plants…for now…i also have a small dish in the tank that i spot feed for them…

for the scallop is use PhytoPlan by TLF and GP Reef & Larval Fish Diet

i also feed the planted tank Kent Marine Iron & Manganese…

I use it extreme sparingly since i hate using things i cant test for…

i was more worried about the scallop…they wont leave it alone, and i know that crabs & shrimp pick at them…its out for now

I’d occasionally add “live” phyto as well from ReefNutrition or DTs.
