VHO T12 Very Hot Old Technology from 12 years ago? The club collects old stuff like that to be properly handled and disposed of by the state.

two of my tanks are lit with nothing but VHO. 440 watts per tank.

I still have VHO’s as well and they still work fine. Although I think the new T5’s have more color choices they are alot hotter then my VHO’s but do draw less power.

How many new T12 fixtures have you heard coming out in the last year? There are plenty of reasons. I’m not saying you two should trash your fixtures, but if this person is looking for dated technology when there are better options when they are starting from scratch…

I don’t have a fixture

Mine is a DIY with a Ice cap ballast and if you run T5 on a ice cap ballast there over driven and there life is almost cut in half. I’ve can run t12 for a solid year on the same ballast.

I'm kicking around doing a 5 ft T5 but not committing to it. I will say if there was a 6 ft T5 I'd already have it and the T12' s would be gone. T5's are great if you have a smaller tank, to run them on mine and get the same light you need at least 4 and then your close to wattage comparison anyway.

So basically you are saying if you were starting from scratch and had a 48" tank, …

then you would recommend T5s? Just want to make it clear for the thread starter.

I would half to agree with ya even up to a 60 inch tank I think they would work pretty well also. Just with a 6 foot or bigger multiple tubes are needed for the length.

I also run 2 VHO bulbs on my 180 gal tank and think they show off the colors of my corals very well. I don’t think the original post was asking for advice about which bulbs are newrer or better, sounded to me like their mind was already made up. Good choice of bulbs IMO.

LOL

Thanks John

Yeah guess we went a little off topic there >LOCO< and I agree I still like my vho's also, but the new 6 foot LED tubes work pretty darn well also >LOL<

actually i already have 4 t-5’s running off an ice cap 660 I’m looking to add 2 t-12 to get better color off the corals. So I will be running a total of 6 bulbs.

Here is a long awaited, and still coming soon to a store near you item. A True VHO T5 light hood. SunLight Supply has been working on one. 4 x 4ft T5 lamps with beefed up electrodes, thicker glass and a lot more phosphors inside, specially made to run at 95 watts and i guess 1500MA for a true VHO light effect.

i just might be interested in this one. True VHO run at 1500 MA as opposed to HO 54 watt lamps that run at 800 MA. if so, it should run at about 380 watts. a little less than the equivalent T12 VHO at 440 watts. But should have more light output.

OK I’ll bite - -what the heck is an MA?

MA = Milli Amp, not Miley Cyrus. 1500 MA is 1 1/2 amps. The unit of current flow. more flow at a given voltage, or pressure produces more work, or more watts which means more light. probably because more electrons per second are bombarding the phosphors gives more light.
