LR turning brown????

So we bought some stuff that is supposed to “purple up” the tank, which it really didn’t do anything the first couple of days… and now all of a sudden ( 2 days after the cookie incident) the live rock and some of the floor of the tank is turning a deep brownish. Not sure if this is normal. (We bought the purple up from the fish bowl) If it is normal, how long will it take for the purple to show??? Any input?

I’m guessing that purple up treatment is some additive to stimulate coraline right?

Yea

i would say algae of some sort. did you check water quality? im soure someone else will be more help lOl. try to get a pic.

the purple up is pretty mush a “beginners” calcium additive. helps the growth of coraline, but does not form it on it’s own. u must have coraline in the tank first, then this stuff helps it spread and grow. the brown algae is simply “new” tank stuff going on. diatoms in the water are forming algae prolly from your light/phosphates/feeding/ or a million other reasons. let it cycle, get some snails and wait it out. i have never heard any problems with brown algae from the purple up. it’s just ionic calcium, strontium, magnesium, and carbonate. also claims to replenish iodine. basically, a reef “recipe” in one bottle.

Yep, that was more or less going to be my answer.

HA!!! …i read the bottle… :SURRENDER

His tank is still cycling! Diatoms for the win! Heh the purple up won’t do much in this stage. There is coraline on the rock that i gave him. He has 150w MH Sunpod on a 55gal long. Once the diatoms recede though prolly another week and you can add the Clean up Crew (CUC). YahoO

Wow I should have paid WAY more attention in chemistry…

If you decide your coraling is not growing fast enough, save your money on the purple up. You are welcome to come over and harvest some of my Superman Coraline to seed your tank.

I’ve got some green coraline that kicked Craigs purple in the butt. That rock you gave me, is now green!
