I believe I read somewhere the way to tell ths sex of mandarins is by the top front dorsal fin. The males have a spiked front dorsal and the females do not. Please let me know if this is the correct manner of doing it.
So if it is this way, then Shawns’ would be a female.

Correct, the one in my picture is a Male . my female is smaller and lacks the spine she’s also pretty shy for some reason

If you see a female get her because they are much more rare than males. Ive read differing opinions as to the actual ratios but when i pay attention 9 times out of 10 all the mandarins in a given store at a given time are male.
I totally agree with you Shawn, the other concern is, that mandarin gobies should only be placed in a well established tank. And on that thought, having two in the same tank could put a limit on the amount of the available food source. Hopefully, you can get them to eat some frozen mysis shrimp, to supplement their diet.
exactly. i spent a lot of time training my female to eat frozen. it was a PIA because i had to constantly buy live brine but it eventually paid off. Ive had my mandarin in a 34g for the last 6 months with little issues except for the quantity of food i need to feed to give her a chance to compete with all of the pigs!

2 things about them, mandarins are not gobies at all, they are dragonets, and they do not have scales at all! weird
yea they have a slime coat like the gobies do though. and my two mandarins and scooter have plenty to eat… heck in the fuge any rock you touch pods crawl all over your hand it’s kinda sick…
