Meeting Monday 11/16 @ 7pm William Penn High School

With the two meetings so close together this month, its has been decided that Ellen and I will “host” this meeting in order to help with things. Meetings are going to be one of my biggest priorities as president for the new year and im hoping to give a glimpse of things to come next week. I will be making a post similar to this a week before every meeting next year. In order to explain this post, it will be easier to announce some of the things you can expect at this meeting and beyond.

  1. There will be “good” food at each meeting. Thats why the RSVP is important so that we can get the quantity right.
  2. Starting monday, there will be a $5 raffle at each meeting that i will describe in more detail in a moment.
  3. I will post the agenda for each meeting in a thread like this created a week prior to each meeting outlining the events for the evening as well as the raffle prizes.

With such short notice, i wont be able to implement everything to the degree i would like to on monday, but im hoping to provide a glimps of whats to come. Raffles, like i mentioned, will be $5 raffles. The difference in amount will help to cover the “good” food and raffle items as well funding for future events. I plan to have frag raffles at each meeting and not just any frags. Great effort will be made to acquire quality frags that ideally no on has and everyone wants. Attention will be paid to the fact that not everyone can keep every frag and effort will be made to have at least one quality “beginner” frag at every meeting. To give an idea of the quality im referring to i would like to see things like darth maul, spiderman, rainbow palys. Pink lemonade, bonsai, purple monster sps, rainbow acans etc. There will still be drygoods, but my emphasis will be on quality over quantity. I would like to see things like larger amount gift certificates, salt, test kits, food, etc. the things that we all need and use. the things that we might be less likely to “accidentally” leave at a meeting ;D

Again, we didnt have much time to prepare so we are kind of winging it this meeting. So far, here is the lineup everyone can expect.

Raffle items will be a ORA Nathan’s Green Millipora, ORA Green Digitata, Bali Green Slimer, and Nuclear Green Palys. Anyone see a theme? >LOL< It was completely by accident! I will post the names and pics of the frags and other raffle items a week before every meeting. We will also have a small 2.5g tank setup with a light fixture to display the frags and add to the exictement. Please, bring your own container if you plan to enter the raffle. I will have pics up later tonight of the frags for this meeting!

The food will be a surprise, but it will be banging!

The agenda will be the remaining officer election and thoughts about 2010. Ellen and I want to run a few things by the club at large to get some feedback and ideas for what everyone would like to see in 2010. I will be very frank in saying this. If you want your ideas to be heard and implemented, come to a meeting. Personally, i give much more weight to the opinions of members that show up to meetings and participate than i do “armchair quaterbacks”.

So, bring your appetite, bring your ideas, bring your $5 and i look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting!!

After giving it a little thought, i wanted to make sure i didnt come off wrong with locking the thread. Please feel free to make any comments regarding the meeting, or topics addressed in the thread especially if you wont be able to make it Monday. I would only ask that we dont sidetrack it with OT posts. Thanks!

Also. Just got a pm regarding the frags. For now, this is how it will work but its always open to feeback and change.

$5 buys you one raffle ticket and one chance. with the anticipation of getting some really nice stuff down the road some people may want to buy more than one ticket. you can buy 5 tickets for $20(avg price of a frag) and greatly increase your chances of winning. We wont draw a ticket for a specifc frag, instead the first person drawn gets first pick. This should help eliminate the chances of someone getting a frag they dont want. If for some reason you end up with a frag you either already have(hopefully unlikely ;D), dont want, or cant keep, i really dont think it will be an issue. Every frag will be worth substantially more than the $5 you paid for your ticket and im sure someone will either offer to buy it from you or at least trade you for it.

we will see how it goes and make changes as needed!

What are the chances of bring the meetings back to the Newark Library?

It can certainly be looked into, but i think its unlikely for two reasons. The most important is that the library is very stringent about what we can and cant do as far as DIY demos, food, drink, noise, etc not to mention that they will literally throw us out if we run a little over. Secondly, although the newark library is about 5 minutes from my house, i think WP highschool is much more centrally located being literally one turn and 3 minutes from I95.

Its always going to be tough to find a venue to please everyone. Rotating venues has been looked into but, personally, i think it can do more harm than good and fracture the club. Personally, while WP might not be glamorous, i think it suits our needs as a club very well. I believe that having a consistent meeting day, time, and location are important but we can mix things up with events and trips at different locations. I think a good effort was made this year by the current officers to do exactly that and we will continue to do so. I believe its inevitable for this topic to not come up time and time again, and im more than willing to take another look at it if its seems necessary.

quick question, so this will be my first meeting(well besides the one on sat at armco) as well as my first time in WPHS. where in the building are the meetings held?

good question.

as soon as you walk into the main doors, there is a cafeteria directly across the foyer area to your right. Ellen and I will be there a little early setting up so it should be hard to miss.

shawn, off topic, but if the meeting is Monday 11/16, what’s this:
Question: Will you be attending? (Voting closes: November 17, 2009, 02:45:44 PM)
it boggles the mind

i think im missing your point?

Shouldn’t the poll be closed before the meeting

meeting is the 16th poll closes on 17th. > the day after meeting

my wife explained why: if you close voting on the day of the meeting, someone wanting to vote yes on that day cannot! right LD

we wont be picking up food until right before the meeting so i figured i would let the poll run until then to get the most accurate head count.

in other words…if you dont vote dont eat :stuck_out_tongue:

which reminds me, i will be changing the poll to allow for more than one vote. if your bringing a friend, sig. other, or your mom(brett :P) vote twice if you will both be eating so we get enough food for everyone. even if you dont think you will be eating, but will be coming vote anyways. i would rather have a little extra than not enough.

Thanks, looking forward to meeting all of you, even tho ill meet some of you on sat at armco

Sounds good, might have to drag my other half along. Quick thought regarding raffle. IMO raising the price of raffle tickets to 5 dollars is not going to gain more money. I feel that the exact same amount of money if not less will be collected. Think about it, most people buy tickets based on their finances not the amount of tickets, well sometimes. I feel that with a 4 dollar jump that the ticket sales will go down. Yes, they are better items, but for 20 bucks you get 4 tickets. Maybe I’m viewing this wrong, but i feel that by raising the price the raffle money will stay the same. Maybe with a more moderate raise to 3 bucks and 4 for 10 bucks would be a little more manageable. I also feel that the values in the items being raffled should be dependent on the amount of people going. I’m sure you have already talked and figured all this out, but i just wanted to say and point out. Either way i’m going to spend the same amount of money, whether its 5 tickets or 1 ticket. I think i just argued in a circle, but do you see what i’m saying, kind of.

The food thing is a good idea, and keeping it open all day on the 16th is a good idea also. I am happy for you as president, and i feel you have high aspirations for the club.

Can’t wait till Monday, and Saturday.

If you eat twice as much should you vote twice as much?

well, like everything, we will just have to try it out and see what happens. personally, i dont agree with you, but i could be wrong. the amount of money i spend on raffle tickets has 0 to do with my finances and everything to do with the prize. out of curiosity, im going to start a poll in another thread. anyone with an opinion, please weigh in and feel free to comment on the other thread so this one doesnt become a raffle thread.

and for the record, i still dont get the significance of the poll time ??? i can leave it open until 2034 and it doesnt matter. before we get food, Ellen and i will look at the poll, see what the number is, and order the amount of food accordingly. however, i now realize how important this is to some of our members, and i will be sure to end the poll at preciscely the right moment the next time in order to avoid getting a citation from the poll police >LOL<

i will or will not buy raffle tix based on the prizes, not the cost of tix.
and to return to the poll police topic. i just thought it was odd that you could vote after the meeting, but since i had it explained to me, there is no more confusion. subject’s closed as far as i’m concerned.

thanks for the feedback paul. if you havent weighed in on the raffle poll, please do so i can get an idea of the overall opinion of the club. i happend to agree with you 100% and this was our thoughts in making the change.
and to return to the poll police topic.
im just giving you a hard time. i just didnt give it a lot of thought when i set the timer. i know that people are busy and sometimes are available or not available at the last minute and didnt want anyone going hungry.

can u open the poll my father will also be there so i want to add him too
