Meeting Questions

Let’s use this thread to post up the question s we’d like to get answers to (hobby/club related) at this months meeting.

I would like to know more about closed loop system.would really like to put one on my 54 corner instead of power heads. Has anyone used the squid switch current i like the concept but heard there crap

I’ve had one for about 4 years now. They do seem to eat up some of your pump output to drive the switching. I just upm sized my pump to overcome it. Went from mag 7-mag 12 seems to be fine. Soak in in vinegar bath about every 3 months along with pump to keep it free of any build up. I still needed 1 powerhead in the tank to keep things moving behind the rock work.

I have a HOB overflow box, a DIY built to similar dimensions as found on Melvesreef.com. I have a Charge/Bleed line for air drilled into the top of the overflow, with a plastic adaptor glued in the hole that hooks up to an airline. That putting suction on the airline fills the overflow when I need to charge it, and I hook it up to a powerhead in my sump to keep it charged.

Problem: The 260gpm powerhead airline connection doesn’t provide enough suction to keep the overflow charged, which periodically backs up with air and puts my tank at risk for overflowing. I have to remove the air manually every 2 weeks or so (I hooked it up to the powerhead to avoid this, but it hasn’t helped).

I need suggestions for: Keeping air out of my overflow box; A better method for keeping the overflow box charged; Design suggestions to remedy the problem.

Thanks!

i cannot keep a thriving population of pods in my sump. i have rocks and some chaeto and a few other plants in it. bought 3000 two diff times in 3 years. i may see a dozen. most of them large. never see them in dt

Djohnson have you tried an aqua lifter. CPR overflows use them. I think you would need a positive displacement pump rather than a venturi design. Just make sure you use the prefilter and keep a diaphram on backup(BRS has them)
