I would like to thank everyone that attended tonight. The results of the raffle were overwhelming and we are very excited and motivated to make the next meeting and raffle even better. I apologize for being so long winded at the meeting, so i will keep this brief. Ellen will post pics when she gets a chance. Please use this thread to provide feedback about the meeting in general and also to comment on any of the topics that came up. Also, feel free to suggest any ideas that you might have for what you would like from your club in 2010. I want to thank everyone again for their support. The impact that everyones participation and contribution have on the club will be very clear at the next meeting. Stay tuned!
The long quote is from John(March). He beat me to the post meeting thread so i copied and pasted it here.
So where to start. First off another great meeting with a lot of important information covered. I feel like the next year is going to be a lot of fun, and I feel that the club will continue to move in the right direction. I think the basis of this club is memberships. There was a lot of talk about stepping up to the plate and contributing to the club, and supporting better raffles. While that is a big thing I think membership and activity is the main basis for the club. The more people we have in the club, the more that come to meetings, and the more that contribute on the forums the more perquisites the club will have. With more people the more money going into raffles, larger group buys, and in the end more money going into the club. You here Meleev talk all the time about his group buys where they get snails for .16 cents. While it might take a while to get to that extreme I think it’s doable. So I think as a club we need to focus on getting us heard and out there. The only reason I found this club is because I was looking for one, and I guarantee that a lot of people don’t know we exist and if they did they would join. We talked a little about online advertising at my first meeting with google adsense. While this wasn’t to plausible for our situation it was a step on the right path. What about getting different LFS to advertise us? I know this was talked about but I don’t know what the ultimatum was. I think helping the environment and getting our name published also works. Our own members can write up articles and submit them. The green topic is big right now, and I’m sure a lot of local papers and magazines would bite on it. So I think we need to get our name out there. One way of doing this which I thought was a really good idea was the mythbusters like thing. There are so many theories and what if’s out there that we would have more than enough work. Just search on RC for a few mins and you can find 5 projects. I think we should really get a jump on this. I have “ on “ room to hold some stuff, but it would have to be more short term because in august I will be off to college and only making a meeting every other month ( I will try every month). Then starting threads on RC and being active with that thread. Its hard to get a thread to stick on RC but if you get it going it catches on like wildfire. Also sending our publications to Coral magazine, or other magazine and editorial providers. Logan, you talked about the whole experiment with the 2 membranes, everyone is talking about it might working. You seem to know a lot about it and that could be the first mythbuster thing we do and try to get it out there. RCA, knows a lot about the whole genetics of Picasso clowns and seems to know a lot about clowns in general. As do ken and I forget the third person. Write something up on that. There are so many talented people that it should be easy to get us out there.Another thing was putting business cards in books at the shelves in borders. T-Shirts are a big thing. Find a catchy phrase and get people hooked and you are sure to get some views. I think that is something we should look into. We all have friends of friends, and have connections everywhere. I think it’s like the 6 degrees of connection, where using 6 people you can get connected with every other person in the world. There are people that can get us better known.
Another method that I brought up to Jon, gordonious, briefly is filming DIY, Fragging, and other things and posting on youtube and forums. Everyone here has probably heard of limpitsreef on youtube, if not check it out. There’s others like LAfishguys. Youtube gets astronomical amounts of hits, and if we have quality video, and editing it will give us a name. The problem is is the Quality of production. The first attempt at the Fishbowl didn’t go so well as Jon has seen the videos. My camera is good, but not amazing and I’m sure there are people with better cameras. Mics aren’t that expensive to get, and for editing my school has every program known to man. Also I can get almost any program known to man through my mothers work for free. While I know a little about editing, I can learn a lot.
The thing is the hobby is always evolving and we have to evolve with it. While presentations on the importance of dosing and such are informational, its old news. We need ground break stuff, and ways in which to incorporate this stuff into our reefs. There is a lot of current research going on and reporting on that and on things as a club we do (i.e mythbuster type thing) then we can keep people interested and coming back for more. Also we can get noticed on line. While we all don’t know everything about fragging, and it is informational, a lot of us know how to frag a lot. While fragging harder corals could take more effort, and equipment it would be interesting, and if posted on the internet could get a good amount of views. There was a thought in my head about a DRC aquaculture type thing, but I didn’t really think that would work now that I process it more.
The raffle, I take back all naysay I ever said. 5 bucks is the magic number, as I felt no guilt in spending 20 bucks for 5 tickets. Great idea, keeps it going. Food is a good idea, but I feel it’s over the top. Do more basic things like pizza and chips, or hotdogs and chips, something a little cheaper and were not meeting 4 times a month so simple cheap food once a month won’t kill anyone, right? All in all, I would say a lot of good things were discussed tonight. I will probably formulate more in my head as I sleep and take a shower, but I have to go let my corals out of the bag and hit the sheets.
That’s all for now, keep up the good work in my opinion.
Sorry for poor grammar and vocab, im a little tired.
John, i can go into greater detail tomorrow, but i will tell you that every single one of your ideas has been considered to one degree or another. We have very specific ideas on implementing many of them very soon, but as i stressed in the meeting, we have to start with the basics first. There has never been a shortage of ideas in the club, just a shortage of follow through. After tonight, however, im very excited that we can change that. I will briefly touch a couple of your comments.
Reef Mythbusters - the feedback regarding this was good. we will likely begin on the logistics of this very soon, and once we have a foothold we will look to the club for ideas and participation to make it a reality. I really feel that this idea can take off.
Multimedia content - this is huge for me and ive already begun the groundwork to make it happen. your comments are spot on regarding lack of quality and youtube. think stabilized HD video and on-site access.
Food - sorry, but i know for a fact your opinion is in the minority. if it makes you feel better, dinner tonight didnt cost more than cheap pizza. 5…5…5 dollar foot looooong!!! ;D
Group buys - “group” is the operative word. we need participation to make these sucessfull.

I will post the pics as soon as I get a chance. I have been super busy at work this morning. I want to second everything that Shawn has said. If everyone continues to participate at the level we got last night the club will exceed all of our expectations. I will post more later.
Here are a few pics showing just how much fun we had last night at the meeting:
I think everyone can agree the food was very good:
The frags that were raffled were a big hit also:
Bali slimer & Nathen’s Green millie
green cap
Jon doing introductions
The crowd to buy raffle tickets
Shawn and Marty picking the winning tickets
A view of everyone listening intently
All in all it was a great evening. If you didn’t make it you missed out. We have lots of great ideas for activities in the coming year, so be sure and join us next month!
Great meeting GolfC Looking forward to the next one!
Was a good meeting. Definitely a fun time. I am very excited about the upcoming year. Not that I wasn’t before, but some great ideas were hashed out during the meeting. Was great to get some feedback on some of the things we have been discussing behind the scenes.

Wow I look horrible in that pic. Didn’t get any where I don’t look like a lost cave man?
Soon as I can I will start to work on getting a Hobby impact/environmental/“let’s not piss mother nature off too much†forum section thingy.
Wow jon, your formality kills me lol…
What ultimatum did we come to regarding a food donation jar?

I do apologize about there not being a veggie sandwich for Paul. We had talked about it, but I guess it slipped our minds at the last minute.

sorry. that was my fault. i actually did bring it up to Ellen, but then completely forgot about it when i made the order. i have the next two dinners planned already. one will have two non-meat options, the other will be a little tougher. when its possible, i will make sure there is at least one vegetarian option. when its not feasible, at least the meal will be listed ahead of time so that you know. Of course there will always be some sort of snack/side available that will almost always be non-meat, at least im pretty sure the brownies didnt have meat in them:) ummmmm…brownies!!
well, if i’m the only veg there i really like a cheese sub, small, next time. thanks, but no need to worry.
what’s great that i see about the ideas the elected people express is that they will be keeping the rest of us informed, in advance.
