Montipora and FW Dips

I nuked all four of the beautiful monitpora frags I got from the frag swap during acclimation.

One is a done for sure, the other three are clinging to life and might possibly heal.

All the corals and clams I got from the swap received a 15 minute REVIVE dip in their own water and then were given a brief RODI water bath (10-15 seconds) prior to introducing to the tank.

I’ve done a little research and I’m seeing quite a few threads about montiporas having zero tolerance for even a brief fresh water bath.

Every other species I introduced looks great, it’s just the montiporas. They put off a ton of mucus after the fresh water bath.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Ken, do you know the name of the gentleman who works with the school system that had these awesome frags? I know he mentioned there were other swaps coming up and I’d make a road trip out to his next swap to try and purchase these frags again!

Why are you dipping anything other than acros?

I’ve had such a bad experience with my last tank fighting aptasia, flatworms, green bubble algae, invasive calurpa, monti eating nudibranches… I guess I’m just trying to be overly cautious and start this one off on the right foot. I’m dipping everything.

I never knew that SPS, and monti’s in general, were so sensitive to a brief FW dip. I’m not sure how I had this much of a knowledge gap. But then again, I wasn’t always dipping in the past.

There is no doubt in my mind that I killed or at least brought all four of those beautiful frags to the brink of death after only 10-15 seconds in RODI water. I had no idea. Lesson learned.

I just hope I can track this guy down.

Fyi revive doesn’t do anything for most of what you mentioned. If you that concerned you should read up on peroxide dipping. It will take care of almost all of what your trying to get away from.

I’ll check that out, thanks!

I use several dips but never FW.
Bayer Advanced Complete Insect Killer > I dip everything thing in this. This is to kill as many pest as possible

Hydrogen Peroxide Dip > I dip all Zoas and frags that have any algae on them, this kills algae and fungus

Iodine dip or Coral RX > I dip all corals in after any other dip before placing in tank, this helps with healing.

I use to use Revive as my pest dip but lost more frags with it than the Bayer and Bayer seems to cover a broader range of pest to boot.

One way to cut down on having the kind of issues you have had in the past is to be real picky about who you are getting your coral and frags from, using a reputable vendor who has been in the industry for a very long time, should tell you that he is doing it right. Also be careful with hobbyists who you buy or trade items. Everybody in this hobby at one time or another will experience unwanted hitchhikers, but we help ourselves by being more cautious.

I believe the guy you are looking for is Larry flint from Williamsport high school. He was set up in the back corner of the cafeteria. He did have some nice pieces! I got two frags from him myself. I hope everything bounces back. If your interested I have a red cap and a green cap with blue polyps. Hope this helps.

Thanks, guys!

I have often FW RODI water dipped acros, and zoos for 15 seconds if i suspected red planaria or other flatworms. never had a problem. but never did a Cap. wasnt aware they are that sensititve.
