Movin on up

I bit the bullet and bought a 90. I’m going from this :

To this:

Pictures don’t do it justice. My current tank is only 40 gallons. More pictures to come.

Big jump , congrats on the bigger tank ::thumbsup::

Good luck with the new tank PBJ!

any ideas for keeping the sand in place when adding water to the tank?

If your adding the sand first you can place a large plate over the area where you will be pouring the water. Will you be rinsing the sand first this will help with cloudiness and the time it takes to have a clear tank/

I was hoping not to rinse. Seems like it might be a pita. I can deal with cloudiness for a little while. Fish have a temporary home.

Are you starting this tank while keeping the 40 running or are you trying to transfer everything over into this tank?

Transferring everything. Sand and water included

Temporary holding tank.

I would take the opportunity to clean the sand, get a 500 to 800 micron media bag scoop the sand into it and than swoosh it in a bucket of clean saltwater.

+1. If you are moving LS that’s been in place for a while, I would say this is a must.

I want to use vinyl tubing from my return pump to the bulkhead. is there a threaded barbed fitting I can screw into the bulkhead to attach the tubing? If so, what size and where can I find one. Lowes didn’t have anything that would screw into the bulkhead.

Also, I got a slip fit barbed connection that I’ll replace once I get something better. But in the meantime, I turned the pump on and everything’s moving as it should. The overflow works ok for a couple minutes, then the water level rises and the water is then forced down the drain creating a lot of noise. I believe it should be a lot smoother and quieter. Any suggestions?

a picture of what your drain pipe looks like inside the overflow would be very helpful.

Some people use a durso drain pipe, really easy to make.

do a search on google for durso standpipe

I have a durso on it. I just put my ball valve in and turned down the return line and that fixed it.

Here’s a pic of the return in the overflow.

did you even look at what a durso is?

looking at your pic it doesn’t look complete, hence the noise
you shouldn’t have to turn your drain flow down, there is a huge hole in the side of your drain pipe

I know what a durso is, I’ve built and used them before. Everything that is in the picture came with the tank. I made no modifications. I realize that it is missing a piece, but the packaging billed it as a durso so I called it that. Instead of having a tee with a cap on top and a 90, it has 2 90’s with a hole in the top with ridgid tubing in it. I’m not sure why there’s a hole in the side of the pipe. I’ll need to look into that more.

my 2 cents about the questions you asked are, the barbed fitting you are looking for would be found @ drs fostersmith or petsolutions. both places have various sizes. it depends on the width of the tubing you are going to use.for the 2 question. the drain pipe, the hole is a syphon break and for the noise, looking at your picture, I believe the water level is too low. try maybe lowering the pipe some what to raise the level . I think you have too much air space in the pipe elbows

That hole in the side is a siphon break. You need to make sure the water level stays just above that point. There are so many variations on what people call durso these days. I’ve always found durso’s to be loud where they dump into the sump. The turbulent flow kills it.
