New Anemone

Well yesterday, Lindsay and I got our new tank, and got a shipment in the same day! (Very busy day!) We decided to get a new anemone (ritteri) for our clowns b/c they have beat up every BTA that we have purchased. Well… with no further delay:

Here is when they first hosted after the lights went off:

And now today once it found where it wanted to stay with our clowns

This was my female gazing into the center of it:

As they get use to it:

After feeding

We know that Ritteri’s need great care, very good water conditions, and great flow, and we have that and it is very happy to this point and We will keep you updated

where did u find that beautiful ritteri ? locally ???
very nice…

Liveaquaria… I took a bit of a risk… and it was the first time buying anything live off line, but so far it has sure paid off!! YahoO

And the other two fish we got with the order  A Beautiful Six Line, and a Beautiful Half Black Angel.

So Needless to say it was a Very busy day of acclimation on Friday  But everyone looks Great!

I really like your sand. I tried the black mix once, but it got dirty really fast. What do you have for a CUC?

joe, i totally agree. i have a mostly white with about 5 % black. doesn’t look nearly as nice as the mostly black.the black in my tank, though, seemed to pick up hold and grow algae and dirt much more than the white pieces. got a white sleeper goby and my sand is spotless though. he is a busy boy.

Thank you  We had no black for a while and always talked about how cool it would be to have… but then we decided to get it 3 months ago… That was a bit hectic b/c we bought a bag of the Hawaiian live sand which is almost all black, then just mixed it with what we had. It turned out great but that was sure a stressful day for all our fishes and us :P.

Our CUC is just a bunch of snails: (turbo, astrea, and some nessarius)- i know i probably misspelled them but im tired lol and we have two hermits… that don’t do anything except kill astreas for shells lol. But the nessarius do a great job going through the sand cleaning it up! We make sure we do water changes twice a month and the tank does the rest  (That on top of the fact that our two cleaner shrimp eat everything that comes into the tank if our fish don’t including flakes and such so… the only real waste is just their poo :stuck_out_tongue: but… we have A Lot of flow through the tank b/c of the ritteri and it picks most the crap up and sends it right into the filter sock which we make sure gets changed when needed  The protein skimmer does the rest of the filtration and that is our tank for the most part

One beautiful new anemone. I hope it does well for you. I am no expert with anemones, but it seems happy so far. Do you plan to spot feed it or feed extra for it broadcasting? What sort of foods?

wow that things huge!

Wow, that thing looks like a full table shrimp would be a snack!

I spot feed all my anemones  Twice a week. This guy is different lol… HE’S BIG lol  Lindsay fed him silversides and a Krill yesterday and seemed to really like the silversides  We will still probably only do 2 times a week but will probably feed him more each time until we see how much is good for him. For the next week or so its just catering to its needs so that it adjusts well but it has already allowed the clowns to host and it seems to be doing great so we are really excited

Here are my two the following night  They are really enjoying the anemone and the anemone seems to like them too!

If I find out how, I will upload a video I have b/c its really beautiful when in motion

I think this will work  Video time!!!

As you can see… the Angel is still learning to stay away from the anemone :stuck_out_tongue: but everyone seems happy and its beautiful

Wow - 4 clowns hosting in one anemone - that is a sight. That poor angel is going to learn quickly to stay away.

Not actually that uncommon Craig, as long as there is only one female and one breeding male in the other three.

Yep that’s what we have  And they are all happy as long as momma is happy lol :stuck_out_tongue:

very beautiful nem you two. I sure am jealous. Those are not the easiest to acclimate. It sure looks like you got a healthy one. I love the video. What type of lighting are you using over its tank?

Thank you Ellen  We Love it, and in the first few days it has acclimated well. Initially we did a 3 hr drip to a gradual stream. As the stream was going we put a rock in that it could attach to (about second hour). We then added it to the tank and it has been happy since.

We are running:

It is very high in the tank and seems to be happy. If we see any signs that it wants more lights we are gonna throw the light we got from you on until I get down. Hopefully it’ll stay happy tough

I am not very experienced with nems, but everything I have read says they do much better with a point source of light (metal halide) centered directly above them. Don’t change what you are doing if it is working, but it might not be a bad idea to post over on Reef Central in the anemone forum. There are several people over there that are successfully keeping this species and they could offer you the best advice for keeping it happy long term.

Good Luck!

I have read that that does help them… and ESP the Ritteri anemone’s but the plan is once the new tank is set up and cycled, we are gonna move it to there  And for now it seems to be happy, and hopefully it’ll be even happier w/ the better lighting  Our other anemones haven’t had problem’s with this lighting though
