New lighting for my 28gal bow

I have a choice to make and I don’t know which way to go… My 28gal has only a strip light on it with an 18k T8 in it. Zoos and mushrooms are doing great but want to upgrade.

Which should I go with here:

All 24" with Bluemoon LED:
250W MH - $100
x2 65W PCs - $60
x4 28W T5 HO - $70

Are the MH too much for such a small tank?

Wow thats alot of light. The MH might be little much.

I would say the 250W is overkill for that shallow of a tank. Really the only reason to increase metal halide wattage is for increased penetration of the water, and 250W will grow any coral up to 30" down, just look at the display tank at Armco.

I would vote that you should go with the t5s. They are only 10$ more than the pc’s and put out much better light I think. If you dont mind me asking, where is that price from? I am shopping for something for a frag tank.

i agree on the t 5’s the metal halides may cause a heat issure on this size tank also where are these t 5 lights for that price? my sister is starting a 30 gallon set up and we are looking for light for her as well. was going to make one but for that price it does not pay me to buy all components and build it.

I use aquatraders.com a lot for equipment and so far i’ve been pleased with the service. But if something is broken it’s a pain in the ace to get a replacement. Here’s the link

no pic but the site just got revamped so didnt expect one. Pics for the bigger ones are available though.

Does the tank have a center brace? If so, then one MH centered may not be optimal anyhow.

Also, IMO, T5 with individual relectors most definately outperform PC’s.

I have heard bad things about this company. In one instance a person had one of their light fixtures burn up and the company did not want to replace it. I would not buy anything from them. Cheaper is not always better. JMHO.

I’ve ordered three fixtures from them. Hard to deal with for replacements(bulb shipped broken), but never had any issues with the fixtures. I’ve used them for the past five or six years.

Hmm, and that price includes the 4 T5 bulbs as well. If you order from them let me know Ryan, I may want to split shipping with you and pick one of those fixtures up for a frag tank.

I might get in on that for a QT/frag tank as well.

Soem links with information about others experiences with this company. Just so you can make an informed decision about ordering.

Just do a google search and you will find many more. Why waste your money supporting a company like this?

As I said, I’ve had three so far. So far, so good. :SPIT)

Okay. I will shut up now. LOL.

Got 3 shipments from them also and no problems except a bad ballast they want me to pay shipping to send back but will send back a new one free. Eh upgraded to Icecaps anyhow lol. So yea I’ll be ordering the fixture on the 15th or 1st but I’ll wait so yall can get money together.

Haha, I’ve only ordered PC’s, they are soooo cheaper than anyone else. If I had light demanding corals, I might reconsider ordering MH’s after some of those stories.

I have had 2 Jebo/Odyssea fixtures in the past. I got them used, not from here, but after my expierence with them I am willing to give this one a try. The switches can go bad, but they are like 3$ at the LFS. Other than that, they are just as durable as most other manufactuers (ie. Coralife) and much much cheaper.

Thanks for the links Ellen and the experiences guys. Dunno if I’m going to jump in or not.

I’d go with T5s and support my LFS. Have you compaired price after shipping? Or shipping twice if a bulb breaks?

The price after shipping is about 1/2 what any LFS has a similar fixture for with bulbs.

unbeatable price (without moonlights!!!)
…bleieve me, i checked!!
