New Little addition to my 72g bow

just got a blotched anthias its name is Fraggle Rock LoL .

Looks sweet. Plan on getting more or will it be just the one?

Order it from Fraggle Reef?

i paid $150 for it. im happy with the one for now. unless i get a great deal somewhere

i just checked out fraggle reef and the same fish was $50 !!! >::: it was $250 on live aqaia i thaught i was getting a deal.

I don’t think the ones on FraggleReef are the same species as what you now have. I just thought since you named it Fraggle Rock maybe you got it from Fraggle Reef, lol.

I got my frog fish from Fraggle Reef and named it Segar because he was like a rock.

Segar like Bob Seger ?

Hey im getting kinda worried that i don’t have the fish i thought i had,. this fish looks like a fat head anthias. Does anyone know what a juvenile blotched anthias looks like ? cause the store owner said its in its juvenile stage and its look will change. but i googled fat head anthias and they are almost twins of my little guy that i thought was a blotched. PLEASE HELP ANYONE !!! :-("

Yup. He was like a rock so I thought it was appropriate. http://delreefclub.org/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=28&topic=4318.0

It’s better then our Purple Tang we still call “Tang” and our snowflake eel we call “eel”. You’d think by the time an animal doubles in size and requires a 65g tank to itself you’d come up with a better name.

I’m more of a coral guy then a fish guy, but here are some thoughts. If you buy something buy a common name and aren’t sure of what you are buying then it may not be the wises buy. There are plenty of ford explorers out there and my old one sure isn’t worth as much as a 2011 Eddie Bower edition. If you pay a lot for a fish that has blotches on it then you got a fish with blotches on it.

Live Aquaria is typically VERY good with there scientific names. They call a Blotched Anthias Holanthias borbonius. FishBase.org is a pretty good scientific site for looking up a species of fish. There the list some Morphological data for the species that can help you ID the animal. Live Aquaria also lists the scientific name for “fat head” Anthias. Fishbase has a Morphology link for that species as well. There is enough info on both species there to help you positively rule out one species vs the other.

The other thing is if the local fish store owner is bragging about how a skin diver he knows in Florida caught the fish well then it certainly wasn’t a Holanthias borbonius. Neither of those species are found in Florida and the more expensive of the two is said to be found at a depth of 92 - 300 m and usually 200 - 300 m! A bit deep to hold your breath.

I could tell you what the differences are, but it may be more helpful if you take a look at it yourself for future reference with this sort of question.

If these fish look very similar to you and you really don’t care about the difference well the salesman got you coming and going it seems as you may have been just as happy with the cheaper fish which is likely hardier as well.

Note Fish Base does not find any fish with the common name “Blotched Anthias” or "Fathead Anthias.

Oh and if you are interested I have a stripped Anemone fish for only $100. I’ve seen stripped anemone fish on live aquaria for 5 times that amount!

ok i get your point about the stripped anemone fish for $100. this fish is tiny and i was told its the juvenile stage thats why it doesnt look like the adult. i think he made a mistake selling me the fat head for the blotched price. i am 99.99% sure it is the fat head/sunburst anthias.

Very cool Anthias

Congrats!!!

Although while i am not 100% certain, sadly i believe you have been given the wrong fish. The body structure of the fish in your picture looks more like that of a fathead, and not the blotched or borbonius anthias. Plus I could not fins anything that said borbonius or blotched anthias morphed in color from juvi to adult.

Hopefully I will be proven wrong, but in any case it is still a very pretty fish.

Unfortunately ths is the same reason some stores will advertise clown fish as “Percula” instead of the true “ocellaris” that they are. Percula’s are worth more in the hobby.

Personally I never spend more than $100 on a fish - I have 1 worth more than that and only because it was a gift. But I’m also the cheapest SOB in the hobby ;D

I look at it this way - if you were willing to pay $150 for the fish because you thought it was pretty enough to be worth $150 than be happy with your purchase.

I’d also consider shopping somewhere else.

issue resolved. the guy i bought the fish from was very apologetic, we worked it out.

Good to hear

LoL Craig I have to say with reefing or fish tanks we are all cheap in one way or another.
